Help please-data recovery from corrupt DVD

I have a DVD RW (I have just becoime chair on a voluntary charity organisation) created on the previous chair's machine, & it has all the charity stuff on it (& I mean all), & it wont open at all now.

I didn't back it up as it contains some sensitive stuff under data protection (to do with children) so I was keeping it all just on the disc cos it was stuff your not meant to download to anything unsecure apparently.

I did some amendments to Word docs on it on my pc once, & then on another pc, but as I tried to save the last word doc on the other machine it said I hadn't permission (no probs till then) & the file had a problem (can't remembr the wording); I shut it down. Then I tried to open it for the first time after that, on my pc, to do some work on it sunday & as it tried to open the dvd it said there was a fault, & did I want to fix it (can't remembr the wording) I said yes; after that it just hangs when I insert it, & explorer hangs too.
I did download some software then, to try to recover the files ('CD Recovery Toolbox') but it says 'please insert a disc to fix', so it doesn't even seem recognise that the dvd is in the cd drive.

Help please needed on:-
- recovering the data from the dvd, or
- as I opened & viewed the documents on 2 computers, is there a way of getting the data from either machine? is there a 'kind of memory' copy produced anywhere?

[ I have now been told from an IT mate that DVDs produced & read on different machines are unstable, & to use a USB port instaed, so I will do this in the future!]

You can try a scan with MiniTools Power Data Recovery (free up to 1GB of data). The old version had no limitations so if you can find v6.5, I would use that. Good Luck.

EDIT: I am not sure how the DVD was formatted but DO NOT save the recovered files back to the DVD! Save them to the hard drive.
