You'll need to mention some basic specs such as the operatiing system and interface. My assumtion is USB from what you've said. You should be able to pick out a generic interface from the list on hardware wizard.

I tried some basic assumtions that worked in 98 but don't work in XP. Namely the Tab key as a pointer.

Do you have any pointing device that works on this machine? I started to lay out the procedure, then it occured to me I was using the mouse to do all of it, not a good plan if you're having mouse issues.

Have you tried all the USB ports? And have you tried powering up the computer with the mouse installed in them (if the computer sees the device on powerup it will install the drivers automatically).

I'm not sure if it matters, but you may have to do this using an admistrative account.

On XP it shouldn't. OK, I'm going to try to get you into device manager. This can be accessed by <alt><enter> (which is the same as right click on the mouse) on my computer. If you can not find my computer then another way to get there is through the control panel, classic style.

    Click system.

You'll end up with this screen

Then click hardware/device manager. It should show a mouse in the list.

Right click the usb device with the yellow ? beside it and select Uninstall.
Have your mouse and plugged in, reboot and see if windows can use it this time.

It could be your motherboard has popped a fuse, and is no longer supplying the +5V line, or is limiting power to it. Does the camera have batteries? How about the other gadgets? If this is the case it isn't a big deal, an external powered USB hub will fix the issue, but first we need to prove it.

When you uninstalled the mouse, did you use device manager to do it? If not then you need to. The yellow question mark is the computers way of telling you it knows there is a problem, and needs help.

Sounds like you found device manager OK, this is an important function, you will see it again and again as long as you use computers.

I'd be complaining to pcworld. Take the computer and the mouse to show them it doesn't work. We can't guess what they might have "fixed" that broke your mouse.

The thing that puzzles me is the laser turning off on the mouse. This should not happen on a functional USB port with a power supply, but yet everything else works. I'm stumped.

    Just to reiterate what I've been told;

    1. You have tried every USB port, not just one.

2, You have removed the device (mouse) with device manager, removed the mouse from a USB port, turned off the computer, and powered it back up with the mouse installed.

    3. You have removed the mouse drivers with device manager, turned off the computer, powered it back up and let it completely reboot, then installed the mouse in a USB port.

    4. The laser lights briefly, then goes out on the optical mouse.

Does this computer have a PS2 port for mice?

Most mice have a usb to ps2 connector, try that.

Does it work in safe mode?

Have ye tried removing all hidden devices that are a part of device manager?

    I.E.:

Or phantom devices, as MS states. :)

Then remove any grayed out items, pertaining to usb or mice.

How does one get to the command prompt? Well...

Click START, then RUN, then type in CMD (press enter).
