    Hello

I have to upgrade my hard drive (38 gig) to a (160gig) hard drive. I do not want to go through installing all the sfotware etc and would just like to transfer what is on the 38gig HDD to the 160gig HDD.

    Is this possible?

If so could anyone please instruct me in very simple steps how to do it.

    Thanks very much in advance.

First, does your machine have room for a second hard drive inside it? If so, install 160GB into the slave position, format using Drive Manager. Then download and run xxClone for the transfer.

    Hi
Yes i already have a 2nd hard drive in. I am wanting to upgrade to vista and that is why i need to upgrade the 38gig HDD (as i dont have enough space on which has xp on) to 160gig HDD.

Also the 2nd has only 11gig left out of 78gig.

Here's a decent video of how to go about it though it is a couple of years old. I have never been a fan of upgrading off of an existing install but maybe Vista is better at it than XP. Others with more experience will have to chime in. At least it gives one some basics.

I guess the first thing you want to do is unplug the second HD attached to your system. Connect the new 160gb HD as slave. If it is IDE drive you will use the jumper settings for slave described in the drive setup sheet. Then use XXclone to copy the current XP partition to the new HD. [If the 160gb HD is brand new it may have a utility on the installation disk that will do the copying for you--but it may insist that the new drive is master and the old XP is slave]

Remove/unplug the original XP HD and set the new 160gb HD to Master. Check that it boots. If it boots OK then reconnect your old secondary drive and upgrade the 160gb XP drive to Vista.

XXClone to copy your current XP install to your new drive and then the video for the rest. I would personally back your stuff up, make your new drive master and install Vista and restore the backups, not to try and confuse you. I say bite the bullet and start completely clean. Just my opinion.

If you are using XXClone make sure you have the Source and Destination correct.

    Look here: http://www.xxclone.com/ixcman23.htm

Pay attention to the disk number 0 or 1

Drive 0 is the master Drive 1 is the slave.
