I know they have them but wanted your thoughts.

I am going to be going on vacation and will need access to the internet, some of the hotels we are going to do not have internet access. I know they have like USB cards, hotspots and I just wanted to know which would be best to use for just this summer? I am an online student at the time.

They are usually available through cell phone providers, so you may not be able to get one for just a few months. Also, the connection depends on if you are somewhere with cell signal. But to find out, you'd be better off contacting whoever you have a cell phone with (if you have one).

As Sgt. Tibbs stated, most cell phone companies offer a USB stick for 3G/4G Internet access. Although traditional plans require a 1 or 2 year contract, there are other options:

    • Verizon offers a "pay as you go" plan - you pay a set fee per day only on the days you use it.
    • Some carriers (Cricket and possibly Walmart) offer a pre-paid 3G plan - a set fee per month with no contract. If you go this route, be sure to check the carrier's 3G coverage map to be sure it will work in all the cities/places you're visiting.
    • If offered a "4G" card, be sure it will also work on the carrier's "3G" coverage map (some "4G" plans and USB sticks won't).

On all data plans, read the fine print before purchasing or signing up: Most will either tack on extra charges or throttle (slow down) the connection if you exceed a certain amount of data. A limit of 5GB/month should be OK for e-mail and Windows updates. 300MB per month may not. In either case, I'd avoid excessive use of video streaming (YouTube, Hulu, etc.) as it will burn your available allotment quickly.

    Hope these tips help. :)

Also check international roaming charges if you are holidaying abroad. Not sure what the norm is in the states but in the UK charges increase significantly if you make data calls outside the UK.

I know people with smartphones who have come back from holiday and received a bill for several hundred pounds because their mobile device had been comunicating away in the background without them even knowing.

    Hi,

On holiday your main concern should be safety of your data.
Good firewall and AV (use a suite if you are not expert at setting system up).

When you connect to new network your firewall should detect that and ask you in which zone should the network be placed. PUBLIC is the only way to go!

How long do you plan to stay?

You can eventually try Norton IS for a month free of charge. You must register to get updates.
Should you go this way reinstall or disable all other security software and install IS. Make sure that you run live update and reboot few times before you go. Turn on identity protection.

Keep in mind that on the way your laptop can be stolen? If it’s possible don’t use your primary laptop and place your files on the net.

    Have a nice vacation!
