I think Im having problems with spyware...when I turn the computer on a huge ad comes up on my background saying "warning, your in danger, blah blah blah" and a bunch of stuff trying to sell you removal stuff or whatever. I deleted the shortcut that appeared with it and also deleted it from add/remove files, but it still shows up. So I went into task manager and I didn't really know which processes to end, although I had an idea, so I looked up each thing on the net and found that backweb-8876480.exe is some sort of adware or spyware, so I tried to end that process and restart my computer but its still there. I also noticed that svchost.exe shows up 5 times on the task manager. I don't know if that means anything but I thought it was worth mentioning. Hope someone can help?

I just went through the whole process with my spyware, PP and Chaslang are great helpers here. As I learned, tho, you must first look and do the READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT at the top of this forum. It will get rid of alot of the problems. Good luck and then post results after you do those procedures. :)

You got that right Jerry! It is normally easier to post a clickable link for the user so they can find what you are talking about easier.

    Alovlin,
Here is what he was referring to with a bunch more detail on what to do:

First, please follow ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal
If you already have any of the programs linked in the tutorial please double check your version to make sure you have the latest one and that you have any/all updates for the programs.

NOTE: In order to resolve the issues you are having it is very important that you at least try to perform all the steps as outlined. If you have any difficulty please post back letting us know what steps you have completed, what you found while doing the scans if anything and details about any problems you have encountered in completing the steps. The more details you can provide the better.

After doing ALL of the above if you still have a problem:

Make sure you have HijackThis 1.99 and follow the guidelines on where to install it and how to post a log as an attachment. This is all covered in the sticky thread NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Now post a HijackThis log as an attachment to your message (Do not post the log inline). All running programs should be closed, including your web browser, e-mail. Close before running Hijack This!

To repeat: Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder, for example C:\Program Files\HJT

I did all the steps up until the mentioning of downloading hijackthis. Downloading that seems pretty confusing to me so I'm scared Ill screw shit up. I wanted to get someones opinion before I do this. I downloaded all the scanning programs and scanned for viruses, etc, but my computer says its clear even though the background ad is still on!

Downloading it is not confusing. Figuring out what to do with the information it gives you can be. But that's why I told you to post your log. I'll tell you what to do.

Also you should right click on your Desktop and select Properties. Then click the Desktop tab and then the Customize Desktop button. Now in the next window that comes up click the Web tab. Make sure at the bottom that Lock desktop items is unchecked. Then in the Web pages: box delete all items but My Current Home Page and make sure it is unchecked too. Then click OK. Apply. OK.

first of all, what does "post your log" mean? In response to right clicking on the desktop, it only brings up general properties (which says not available), and there are no options to click on. So I can't do anything you suggested.

It means post your HJT this log that I asked you to post back message number 3.

Try clicking Start, Control Panel, and select Display. Now select Desktop tab and then the Customize Desktop button. Now in the next window that comes up click the Web tab. Make sure at the bottom that Lock desktop items is unchecked. Then in the Web pages: box delete all items but My Current Home Page and make sure it is unchecked too. Then click OK. Apply. OK.
