Anyone has knowledge about networking layers

This question comprises four parts. Each part describes a specific networking situation. For each
part, state which one of the following internetworking devices is the best choice: repeater, bridge,
router, or gateway. Do not use the same device in more than one part. In each part, explain why
the internetworking device you chose is the proper one to use and how it functions. (Note: In
each part, the internetworking device in question appears in italics.)
    a. Julie Agrawal uses a cable modem for Internet access at her home. She has three computers
connected to a Fast Ethernet switch. Another device has two unshielded, twisted-pair cables
connected to it. One cable runs to the Ethernet switch and the other cable runs to the cable
    modem.
    b. Brilee Products Corporation has some legacy applications that run on a host computer. This
host system is connected to five terminals in the engineering department via twin-axial cables.
On the host computer, text files are encoded in EBCDIC. Brilee also has forty Pentium 4
workstations on a 10/100 Ethernet LAN with an HP ProLiant ML server that runs Novell
Netware 6.5. One of the workstations is located in the room with the server and the host
system. It has a category 5e cable that runs into an Ethernet switch. It also has a twin-axial
cable that runs into the host computer. Other workstations on the LAN can “go through” this
computer to obtain terminal sessions on the host computer.
    c. Cushman Business College has four computer lab rooms in a wing of its main building. Each
room has 25 computers connected to Thin Ethernet. Four coaxial cables are connected to a
device located in one of these rooms. One cable is connected to a computer in this room and
each of the other three cables goes into one of the other computer lab rooms. Any computer in
any of the lab rooms can access any printer shared on the network.
    d. Dunlop Realty has two offices, one in Detroit and one in Troy. Dunlop has leased a T1 line
from SBC to connect these two locations. At each location, a special device is connected
between the T1 line and an Ethernet switch. Generally, about 80% of the network traffic in the
Detroit office stays on the local network, and only 20% of the traffic goes to the Troy office.
These percentages are very similar in the case of the Troy office.

razy8, this post and your other one both look like some kind of homework. What course is it for?

yes, it is for a class. It is extra credit and the meterial is not in the book. We have to find the answers by doing research. Please help me if you can. I really need everyones help. This is for a networking class. IT is not my major so I do not have much knowledge on these meterials. Thank you in advance....

    FYI:

For future posts, please confine your questions to one thread, if it is related.

    Thanks. :)

Also note that we cannot do your homework for you, but may be able to give you information so that you can do it yourself.

    Research the uses of VPN

As far as you other network questions go..
A gateway is a network point that acts as an entrance to another network. On the Internet, a node or stopping point can be either a gateway node or a host (end-point) node. The computers that control traffic within your company's network or at your local Internet service provider (ISP) are gateway nodes.

In packet-switched networks such as the Internet, a router is a device or, in some cases, software in a computer, that determines the next network point to which a packet should be forwarded toward its destination. The router is connected to at least two networks and decides which way to send each information packet based on its current understanding of the state of the networks it is connected to. A router is located at any gateway (where one network meets another), including each point-of-presence on the Internet. A router is often included as part of a network switch.

a repeater is a device that receives a digital signal on an electromagnetic or optical transmission medium and regenerates the signal along the next leg of the medium. In electromagnetic media, repeaters overcome the attenuation caused by free-space electromagnetic-field divergence or cable loss. A series of repeaters make possible the extension of a signal over a distance.

a bridge is a product that connects a local area network (LAN) to another local area network that uses the same protocol (for example, Ethernet or Token Ring). You can envision a bridge as being a device that decides whether a message from you to someone else is going to the local area network in your building or to someone on the local area network in the building across the street. A bridge examines each message on a LAN, "passing" those known to be within the same LAN, and forwarding those known to be on the other interconnected LAN (or LANs).

Thank you so much for that information. Does anyone know anything about citrix server? I did some research but things are too technical for my understanding. How do I use citrix server to do remote access? Thank you in advance for your help. I am starting to grow interest in this stuff. Is anyone a IT professional in here? What do you do at work and do you like it? Thanks again....
