When I install the card reader on my desktop, the connected hardware icon asks to eject. What to do? Thanks.

What is the operating system on the desktop computer?
Please post the brand and model of card reader. We have no idea if you are using an internal or external card reader.

Was the card reader part of the computer or did you install this after you purchased the computer?

When I put an sd card into one of my internal card readers, I get the usual USB icon near the clock. I don't right click because if you select the "remove hardware", you lose the card reader function and have to reboot to get it back.

Simply remove the sd card when you are done using it. If you wrote to it, allow enough time for the writing to be finished.
