    Hi There

I am currently having problems installing a DVD Writer in my PC.
I currently have a DVD Rom drive which is the :D drive and a CD Writer in drive :E.
However, I want to take out my CD Writer and change it with a DVD Writer. I have opened up my PC and tried this but I can't seem to get it working. My DVD Rom is set to Master. I set the DVD writer to slave and mater and made sure all cables were plugged in properly. But when I booted up my PC it recognised the new Writer, but when I attemted to use Nero 6 to burn a short movie to DVD, it then said...Illegal mode, cant find/start disc at once track. It also wouldn't delete any discs. So something must be wrong. I plugged the Writer in exactly as the old one was, but it don't work. I then put the pld one back and it worked fine. So what's wrong. My Writer came with screws and another wire that goes into the audio, I THINK. But the other end is exactly the same and I don't know were that goes in the PC. My old Writer didn't have an audio wire in it. Someone please help me out with it.

My PC is a Tiny Pentium III
    500 mhz processor
    20 GB
    128 MB

I would try putting the writer as master at the end of the cable

When you say it didnt work earlier, did the drive read discs at all

The audio wire just plugs into the audio slot on your motherboard(check your manual) or if you are using a PCI souncard you should see a slot marked for the cd in cable on the card(please remember this may already be in use if you have a sound cable from your standard dvd drive)

General Lee is right the dvd cd rw has to be set as the master

The audio wire that goes from my DVD ROM is occupying the slot on the motherboard so there is nowhere for the audio wire that came with my DVD writer to go. The drive did read discs for installing stuff/software etc. But it wouldn't erase or write any movies or music to DVDs/CD's. Also I have tried it set to master and left the DVD ROM to master also but to no avail. I tried DVD ROM - slave and DVD writer to master but to no avail so I put my old CD writer one back in and it worked fine. So what's wrong.

ok I guess like you said you went to the cmos settings and set the secondary master to read your dvdcdrw as the master, that is dhould be set as , as for the audio cable on the motherboard their should be a slot to install it, next to the one from your cd , does the new drive copy a disk at all? if it does than check the media your using it might be the wrong type + or - , and lastly I don't know what software your using to write I use nero and for video I have to select video and the same for music but a data cd is the default , sorry i couldn't help

No I aint done cmos settings what are they.
Also I use nero 6 also but it just dont work. It says cant find start/disc at once track. Then it says illegal mode. There is just one connection on my motherboard and the audio cable from the DVD ROM drive is going into that. So what do I do.

Re-install Nero.... sometimes it can not recognise your new installed Writer and think its still the old one, also make sure you have latest Nero version and updates.. if your DVD writer is too new on the market it may just not be supported as yet,

check here to see if its supported http://www.nero.com/en/632012038142166.php

Nero did recognise the new DVD writer but it still wouldn't work. I did reinstall nero 6 and it found the drive again but it still wouldn't work. A couple of months ago I lost a file called winaspi32.dll which is required for your recorder, I think. It got deleted when I uninstalled a program called Advanced WMA Workshop from my PC. I couldn't even copy anything or Nero 6 then and it wouldn't recognise any of my drives. But I reinstalled the program which I think deleted it and I had it back and I have been copying everything perfect again on my CD writer. But my new Optorite DD0201 wont work with it. I checked Nero for supported Receorders and this one isn't on there. But that can't be the reason because there are hardly any DVD + -/RW's on there anyway. So what can it be.

there could be several reasons why this isnt working, but if you have been installing and uninstalling several burning apps its highly likely you have a driver incompatibility issue
Go to Device manager-and double click on your dvd burner-select the driver tab-then select driver details and post back all the drivers listed there
And well take it from there

Also if you use Nero i suggest running the Nero info tool, this is a very handy tool for solving issues with optical drives
Depending on what version of Nero you have it may be already installed, available from the Nero listing in Programs
    if not download here
