Hi, my question is regarding the 7600 model graphics card. I'm trying to upgrade right now and am confused about the 7600GS and the 7600GT. How much of a difference will there be besides the price?
    Thanks for any replies :D

The 7600GT is a great chip.

If you don't care about the extra cost, it's well worth it.

Hey this is a problem that was reported by a couple of ppl on the Newegg reviews...

"This card is absolutely amazing. When I first got it I stupidly didn't bother to check it's factory BIOS revision (18.01)through nVidia control panel and updated to the latest BIOS eVGA had on their website (15.02) and the result was a garbled unusable screen. It took me 2 days and 4 phone calls before someone actually sent me the current auto-updating 18.01 BIOS executable in an e-mail. This fixed the problem and it is back to normal. The sad thing is, either the tech support peeps weren't aware of a newer BIOS or they were told not to divulge it's existence, as no one I spoke to would aknowledge its existance. Needless to say the first thing I did was upload it to mvktech.net, and it is now one of their most popular downloads. As of the current state of the card now, I can acheive a stable and amazing 603/805 without the card ever going over 49C in Doom 3/HL2/BF2. And this is in just an air cooled thirty buck Raidmax Astro with only one additional 80mm fan added."

Will this be a problem for me? I also have a 939 nForce 4 mobo but I dont know what Bios i have...

Yeah, I was getting around 20-25 fps in all outdoor areas, and around 30-33fps in indoor missions at 1600x1200 using recommended settings. Now, I'm getting on average 45-55fps on outdoor and 65+ on indoor maps, with the same graphics settings. I bump it up to use everything, and my framerate drops down to where they were with the 6600. Still playable, but network lag is an issue too, so normally I don't do that. Particularly if there's a lot of other players in the area.

I wouldn't sweat the BIOS, unless you're having serious issues. Chances are you'll probably never have to update it.. unless you want to modify your card. The BIOS that person is speaking of is on their video card, NOT their motherboard. And eVGA's trade up program is pretty damn cool :)

Most manufacturers use an nVidia reference design, so generally there isn't a huge difference between them.

However, BFG give you lifetime warranty, great support, and usually factory overclocked.

If that doesn't concern you, then look at what's in the bundle they offer, like cables, games, and software.

i read through the requirements and fr some reason the Chaintech 7600gt needs a 400w psu but the BFG 7600GT needs a 350w... I guess thats the deciding factor cuz I only have a 350w.:) Thanks for the response insomniac!

I've had 2 ChainTech cards, a TI4200, and a MX 440, and the fan died on both cards.

That doesn't mean it's not a decent brand, but if the money isn't the issue, I'd go for the BFG.

Especially if it states it's compatible with your power supply.

uninstall the video driver, reboot, run Driver Cleaner, power down, swap cards, plug in the power cable to the card, boot, install new driver, restart....THE END

I thought the card just slipped in the pcie slot with out any power cable, my 6600 doesnt have a cable coming out, its just stuck in there. Where can I finid drive cleaner?

    here: http://www.drivercleaner.net/professional.html
the download link is at the bottom of the page

The shouldnt be a cable coming outta the card; if it even needs a power cable then there would be a 4 pin connector on the back of the card. It may not even have one

The BFG Model doesn't have a molex connector on the card, but there's a 4 pin connector on my motherboard for the PCIe bus.

If you already have an nVidia card installed, it should use the same driver so you don't really need to uninstall anything (only a few nVidia models require different drivers).

However, if you don't have the latest driver already installed, then it's a good idea to uninstall via Add/Remove, shutdown and insert the card, then install the latest nVidia driver.

So the card just slides into the pcie slot like you do when upgrading memory? Ty for the link:)

o and I do have the latest frcware drivers, dropping the card in myself sounds like good practice.

very easy. first uninstall your current video drivers using driver-cleaner ( http://www.drivercleaner.net/ )and then shut down your pc. Remove side cover and then make sure you are strapped and grounded or at the very least hold the metal case with one hand to discharge any static electricity and then remove the video card. it's quite simple. when you install your new video card make sure if it needs a molex connected for power that you hook one up. reboot your pc. when windows detects new hardware just cancel out and don't install anything. Now download the latest drivers from nvidia and install. Done.

On another note if you do not feel comfortable working inside your case then maybe paying the $30 to have it done is worth it? It's very simple to do though and if you have installed memory then you can install a video card.

I think I gonna try it out:) , when I dropped in new memory the package came with really good instructions on cd. Someone else put my gfx card in so ive never done that one. but after i opened my case and saw that my pny6600 didnt have any power sources connected besides in the pcie slot I thought i would do this myself. ty for the link:)
Did any of your gfx cards have good step by step instructions in the box?>

    edit: :) :) :) I just bought my bfg7600gt OC at Newegg! Kickass!:) :) :)

    G.T. R.I.P February 4, 2007. You will be missed.

Fairly simple. FIRST consideration is your motherboard, and what graphic slot you have available. Many proprietary motherboards from DELL and other large manufacturers that come with "onboard graphics", which is hard-wired to the motherboard, do/did NOT have a physical slot to mount a video card, meaning you can't put one in. Older boards had an AGP slot, most of the new boards, and most of the new/better card use a PCI-E slot, which is NOT compatible in either direction. Your card and motherboard must have the same slot type configuration.

Once you're sure you can install your new card:

First, go to the nVidia (or ATI, or whatever type card you bought) website and download their latest official driver; the one that comes with the card will usually NOT be the latest one. Save that somewhere on your computer where you can find it when you need it.

Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and uninstall your current graphics driver. Reboot the computer and do NOT let Windows try to install a new driver.

Shut down the computer, and unplug it, or turn off the power supply if it has an on/off switch. Current motherboards keep low level current live on the board even in the "off" position, and you don't want any electricity flowing when you're changing components; can cause damage.

Remove side panel, identify vid card if yours is a separate card. Notice how LONG your vid card is. Many older cards were shorter than the newer ones, and some motherboards do NOT have clearance behind the vid card to install a full-length card. If your new card won't fit, box it back up and return it before trying to cram it in. Unscrew the single screw where it attaches to the case. Some newer cards have a power lead at the BACK of the card; unplug that if necessary. Look for a small locking tab at the rear of the slot, under the card. Some AGP slots lock the back of the card down. Tilt it down/away from the slot to release it. Lift the card out of the slot, SLIGLTLY rocking the card fore and aft can help. If it doesn't come out easily, look again for a locking tab at the rear of the card.

Install new card where the old one was. Note that the metal tab on the connector side goes in between the motherboard and the case. Some judicious wiggling may be necessary to seat both the tab and the card into the slot. Don't force it. Some gentle fore/aft rocking can help here too. Make sure the card is seated all the way in the slot, and the locking tab (if present) is up and locked. If your new card has a power connector at the rear, make sure you've plugged in a heavy standard power lead from your power supply. Replace the screw at the case connection.

If you're replacing an existing card, you're now ready to start up the computer and go to Windows, and install your new driver. Do that manually from the file you downloaded, do NOT let Windows install the driver.

If you had "onboard video" instead of a video card, do not boot to Windows. Boot to your BIOS screen. Find the "onboard video" in BIOS (look for it; different BIOSes set things up differently) and DISABLE it. Then find the option for what video will be displayed, and make sure AGP or PCI'E is enabled, depending on your type. Exit BIOS, saving your settings, and you're ready to go to Windows and install the new driver.

If none of this makes sense, let a local shop do it for you, but definitely determine what type graphics slot you have before buying the new card, either from owners manual, or the computer or motherboard site.

@QBert, you shouldn't really need to use a driver cleaner.

They are normally only handy when you are changing from ATI to nVidia, or if you are having problems.

nVidia recommend you simply use Add/Remove in Control Panel, then install the latest driver.

How do get rid of the extra power left in the mobo?/ My board has pcie slots so i just have to remove my 6600:) . Will taking off the side case panel be enough or will i have to take the enitre pc apart? Ty for the info:cool:

Don't worry about that. Touching the PC will suffice.

Just remove the existing card, place the new one, start it up and install the driver.
