Perhaps you misspelled a word, or maybe the password or username is case sensitive. In other words if your username is smith and when you first entered it you typed Smith with a capital S. Now you enter smith with all lower case. I sense this is a new DELL. You can call support and ask one of their tech people in India to fix your problem. :)

Try to get into Safe Mode, create a new administrator account(remembering the password);), then delete the old one.:wave

    Is there only one user?
If not, log in as a different user and reset the password.

In your first post you mentioned "putting this system together". If this is a new computer, you're covered for tech support.

When the computer boots up, you will see something like "press F10 to enter setup". It might not be F10 - look closely as to what it says.
I suspect your mouse and keyboard are freezing because CAPs locks it set up as on when it boots up. That happened to me; that's probably also the reason why the password is not accepted.

After the computer boots and you see what F key you need to press to enter setup, let it try to load windows, then reboot and press the proper key.
You move through the BIOS or setup by using only the keyboard. Look closely at everything. The tab key will get you to the other sections and the up and down arrow keys allow you to move within each section.
Look over everything and if you see that Caps Lock is set to ON, press the side arrow key to toggle it to OFF. Then look at the choices at the bottom of the screen as to how you get out of the BIOS and save the one change you made.

If you aren't sure, just look around in the BIOS, then press esc to get out and if it asks if you want to save changes say No. That way, nothing will change. Then come here and post any questions you have after looking around in the BIOS.

If they mistakenly used a capital letter in the password, which is possible, then why not try the password again using a capital in the first letter? as an example: They might have typed Bob and later when the problem started typed bob. Just a thought, from experience.

Because the keyboard freezes up. You can't type a thing after the first key you hit. As long as you only use the mouse, there is no problem. Unfortunately you have to use the keyboard to type in a password.
The freezing only happens after windows loads. The keyboard works fine in the BIOS.

If cap locks is enabled in the BIOS, the moment you try to type anything the keyboard and the mouse both freeze; I know this from personal experience and it took me awhile to figure it out.
I have no idea how/why caps lock got enabled in my BIOS because I did not enable it and rarely stick my nose in the BIOS to change anything.
Since the OP's symptoms sound like what happened to me, I threw the caps lock enabled situation out so he/she could check if that is the problem.
