To expand on what plodr said, if it's a SATA drive (2 "L" shaped connectors) you'll need the AC power cord, if it's an IDE (40 or 44 pins for "ribbon" cable), the power will come from the USB port. I run SATA AND IDE drives on my laptop using just such an adapter, but — the drives are not encased and sit exposed on my table. Perhaps purchasing an enclosure (SATA to USB or IDE/PATA to USB 3.5 inch [for desktop hard drives]) would be a better choice. I also use those.

A ribbon cable would suggest EIDE (PATA, ATA, IDE). Easy to tell as PC EIDE drives typically use a 40-pin connector (well, one's blocked so 39) that is over 2 inches wide. 44-Pin drives were almost exclusively 2.5" drives used in notebooks. If 40 pin, you will still need a separate power connection.

Will this be a semi-permanent connection? Or just temporary to copy off your files? If semi-permanent, I recommend an enclosure to better protect the hard drive from long exposure to potential hazards. If temporary, the adapter like plodr would be my suggestion.

If you will be connecting and disconnecting often, I really like docking stations. This one is a bit pricy because it supports both EIDE and SATA.

Then I would go for an enclosure first, then docking station.

In that case, you want something like this

I own two enclosures, similar to this.
The one I've linked to accepts 3.5" drives either IDE/SATA and since it is from a desktop computer, that is the size. Laptops have 2.5" drives. It also has an external power source, which is good for a hard drive. It might not get enough power from just the USB port on your laptop.
It is rated a bit higher than some of the other enclosures offered at Newegg.
