I have purchased a new Laptop without a operating system on it......

I am trying to put a system on it but having problems.....

I have turned the laptop on and this is everything it says on the screen:

    SiS191UNDI, PXE-2.1
    Copyright (C) 2003-2006 SiS Corporation

    SiS191 PXE BootROM v1.3 USE BEV/BBS
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
    PXE-MOF: Exiting SiS191 PXE BootROM.

    SiS191 UNDI, PXE-2.1
    Copyright (C) 2003-2006 SiS Corporation

Can someone please tell me what it means.
What I need to do next etc.....

I have pressed every key on keypad but nothing happens...

Are you sure there is a HD in it?

Regardless, you have to get into BIOS. Restart and try F2 repeatedly as it is starting. Restart and do the same with DEL. You only have a few seconds after restart to see if it responds to the key. Can you get a BIOS screen? You will want to change the boot order moving the PXE to last or removing it altogether. You want CD first then HD.

If you can find a model number and or manufacturer post that here so we can get more info.

NOTEBOOK COMPUTER, made by CLEVCO CO.

I am guessing this is the root of the problem:

    SiS191 PXE BootROM v1.3 USE BEV/BBS
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
    PXE-MOF: Exiting SiS191 PXE BootROM

    But what does it mean??

First, just to make sure you are hitting F2 before that PXE screen comes up. Hit F2 repeatedly as soon as you hit the power button.

Double check that model number on the tag attached the laptop. I couldn't find that exact model at Clevo.

This is brand new correct? Did it come with a manual? If so how does it say to enter Setup/BIOS? I downloaded a manual for model M7xSU which was as close as I could find and it had a Phoenix BIOS (F2) to enter. Yours isn't saying Phoenix.

****Just so you know PXE is a boot from Network option that is usually only used in businesses. That would be ok since the usual remedy would be to enter BIOS and change the boot order. But in this case I think there may be something wrong with your BIOS or HD since you don't get an option to enter BIOS. Nobody else seemed to have any trouble with that model laptop.
    ******

I found this thread which is poorly translated by google. But it looks to me that the same message on boot was experienced by someone when he put in a faulty HD in an Asus laptop. When he put in a normal HD he got a regular BIOS screen. It could be a bad connection to the HD or a faulty HD.

I would make consider contacting Ebuyer if that is where you purchased it because your problem is not usual. It is not something you should have to deal with if it is new out of the box.

That is the model it says on bottom of laptop...
I have managed to get into BIOS by hitting F2 on start-up...

Now what do I do??? And also, will this work with a back-up disc. or a legit recovery disc??

You want to go to the boot menu moving across the tabs along the top of the screen.
You want to change the boot order so that CD is first and IDE is second move PXE way down or exclude it from boot. The navigation tools are the arrow keys and +/- as described in the text on the bottom and right side of the screen.

I'm not sure what you mean by this?

Actually, rereading this whole thread your boot order might have been ok. PXE is last by default. If you started the laptop with no CD in the drive it would eventually try PXE as the last option to boot from.

You should be inserting a Windows Vista/Win7 installation disc in the CDROM and rebooting. It should find the disc and begin the installation process.

The PXE message means that it is attempting to do a Network boot.

    Hi,

If F2 doesn't get you into Safe Mode try F8. Most all comps use F8. Maybe?

    Luck, Jim
