My boyfriend's computer is so extremely slow. I would rather use a stone and chizel to write a paper then dare get on his computer to type it. Its an HP "Kayak" with a Pentium II processor. From what I understand about computers, that is pretty old and crappy. He also uses AOL for his internet service which only slows things down about 100% more. I've tried deleting some stuff (like his Temp. Internet files..which he had over 6,000 of) but I am not exactly sure what I can and cannot delete and I don't want to make things worse. I'm really not good at computers but I usually run adaware/spybot on mine, do you think this is the problem with his? God, I can only imagine the time it will take to download those.. :) Is there anything I can do that doesnt involve buying a new computer? Any suggestions are appreciated!

    Welcome to MG nerdchelle :)

Running Ad-aware and Spybot on his PC too is a must, it could be clogged with spyware. Make sure you update them 1st before you scan.

A nifty little freebie for various cleanup chores (temp files, TIFs, registry, etc.) is Crap Cleaner (interesting choice of words, eh? ;))

Also running Defrag regularly is important.

What OS is he running and how much system RAM in the machine?

Hi, Download the latest versions of whatever you require on your PC (or another friends PC, if no CD burner). Burn it to a CD and load them into his computer that way. This may speed up things. Read old posts to see a list of programs recommended as essential. As well as CrapCleaner I keep recommending

    Cleanup! http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=990
    EmpTemp http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1575

Run all 3 as each one will pick up stuff that others miss. Hope this helps. Bazza

Given that the computer is old and may have accumulated a lot of "information". It may be beneficial to format and reinstall only the necessary applications the you need.

However alanc's question is relevant: "What OS is he running and how much system RAM in the machine?"

If you decide to format/reinstall or clean then you should check to see recent compatible drivers can be installed, may even need a BIOS update - see HP support pages: http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Look...nt=z-A-R1002-1&h_tool=prodhomes&h_query=kayak
