I had the same problem and I literally Googled each process to see what it was and found all sorts of spyware stuff that shouldn't have been there....

But be very thorough and sure before you get rid of anything, and make sure you find out how to completly remove any offending stuff....

You will probably find that most of your processes should be there ya know...

    Cheers

i've already cleaned my system courtesy of chaslang. now i just want to sort through some of the unnecessary running items. my girlfriend has aol 9.0 and that has a ton of running processes however we don't use it very often. i also have a hp all in one printer which also has a lot of processes, many of which i don't use. i guess part of my problem is in the start up and shutdown. there are things running which don't need to be. i noticed with the addition of the programs and devices i mentioned things are slower. i want to end unnecessary processes without completely removing the programs.

    thanks

    click start > run
    type in "msconfig"
    click on the startup tab
this allows you to stop programs from loading at start up.

the services tab allows control over which service you want running.
(research google for a list of descriptions as some are essential or are dependant upon by others)

    Try BlackViper site. http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
Great reference site for XP users.
Sometimes this site is down, “under construction”.

Alternative site if BlackViper site is “under construction”. http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=12

Print out the MG instructions, 11 pages, and follow them through. Bazza

To get a handle on your running processes try Process Explorer.

OK bigbazza, this is why they call me Doofus: How do I "sort PE to descending CPU use"?
Been through the Help menu and all the drop-downs but can't seem to find it.

    Doofus,
1.Maximise Process Explorer (PE), first, if not already done so. Click on the centre box, of the 3 on the top right of the PE screen.
    2. Third column from the left is CPU.
    3. Mouse click on the letters CPU in the heading, once or twice.
    4. All the data will then sort to ascending CPU use, or descending CPU. Depends on what you want.
    5. You can also click on any other column, to also sort in various ways. By clicking on Company name you can sort to ascending, or descending, etc. You can easily see how many processes Microsoft have running, for example.
    6. Go back to (4) above. Click on CPU to sort to descending use. Biggest CPU user is on the top (first entry).
    7. To minimise (from the maximised position), click the middle box, top right of your screen, next to the "x". then use your mouse to size the screen to show the top 4-6 processes. Place your mouse on any border of the PE box, until the mouse pointer changes to a double headed arrow.this requires a steady hand, getting the mouse pointer to the very edge of any border. Then drag the borders until you achieve the size you want. I usually end up with a box of approx 5" wide by approx 3" deep. This shows 7 processes on my screen. Maybe different on yours.
    8. Then click the minus (or underscore) box, the left hand one, at the top right of your screen (minimise). This will close PE, on screen, and shrink it to appear in your tray, bottom of your screen.

All this takes a hell of a lot longer to type, than to do. :D Bazza
