So my computer is noisy as all hell. I have gigabyte GA-8i915p duo motherboard.

I was checking out the gigabyte easy tune utility, and it has some nice features, particularly the fan speed control. The problem is, it seems to have been coded by minimally trained monkeys. It takes a full minute to load up and the GUI is ugly as all sin. So I decided to use speedfan.

Theres 3 power connectors on the mobo for CPU_FAN NB_FAN and SYS_FAN
I'm only using CPU and SYS. This is where things get weird.

Speedfan detects 3 fans, and gives the RPMS of the 2 I have, plus 0 RPM for the NB fan im not using. So now I want to control them. There's 5 "speed" options shown under the fans RPMS.

Speed 1 = when adjusted affects the CPU fan
    Speed 2 = Does nothing
Speed 3 = Also affects the cpu fan
    Speed 4 = Does Nothing
    Speed 5 = Does nothing

What I want is to control my SYS_FAN.

Speedfan seems to only be affecting my CPU_FAN. And not only that, its a combination of Speed 1 and Speed 3 to control the CPU FAN.

    Eg.
    Speed 1 = 100%, Speed 3 = 100%, Cpu fan = 100%
    Speed 1 = 100%, Speed 3 = 0% Cpu Fan = 50%
    Speed 1 = 0%, Speed 3 = 100%, Cpu FAN = 50%
    Speed 1 = 25%, Speed 3 = 25%, Cpu Fan = 50%
    etc, etc..

So yeah. Wtf. Is this program just stupid or am I doing something wrong.

No matter WHAT I do, I cannot effect the RPM of the SYS_FAN which is all I really want to do, because it runs at a constant 4000RPM even while idle.

Thanks for any help, Ive been toying around with speedfan for like 4 hours and its confusing and not giving me any love.

What temperatures is you system running at ?
If you have three wire fan connection to the cpu fan, then it is temperature controlled, and will not slow down if running hot. will determine the speed of the fan

Both SYS_FAN and CPU_FAN are 3 pin connectors on the motherboard.

I can control the speed of CPU_FAN via the Speed 1 and Speed 3 controllers in Speed Fan.

SYS_FAN RPM is unaffected by any of the controllers.

I want to the slow down SYS_FAN to 20% when the cpu is under 40 C.

C'mon man, you're so angry and this is not good. Be a little bit objective.
I don't know if you're a programmer or not, but believe me it's not that simple!

I have read that, nothing on that site or in the help file has been useful for me.

I figure since the program is properly reporting the RPM of SYS_FAN it should be able to control it, especially since it controls CPU_FAN.

According to the write up, speedfan uses 1,and 3 to monitor/control cpu, and it depends on the shutdown temperature you have set in your Bios, to operate efficiently, on other fans, as the overall temperatures od the system govern the adjustments it can make.
Personally, I found the gigabyte utility neat, and once time was taken to understand the controls, as good as anything else. Sometimes the explanation of how to use the controls are a little vague, and it pays to keep trying to get it to work as you want. If neither is working to your satisfaction, have you considered putting in a 120mm fan for the system control, as this will be much slower and far less noisy? - (if it will fit, and/or at the rear of the case):banghead

Wait, wait, wait, what you say is that I can control my fans, cos I have 3 wires?excuse me but isn't the third wire is sensor, and you must have the 4th wire for control?

Goran P- Sorry if I gave leave to misunderstanding, I did not say can be controlled, but Temperature controlled (by the sensor);)

X-Raider, if you were referring to a small 40 x 40 system fan , then I would look for a replacement , if you find it too noisy, Quiet PC do a 40mm Rasurbo fan, which could help your noise levels.

I hope this is of some help to you.zzzzzz

Well, I liked the gigabyte utility too, except for 3 things

    1) It takes very long to load up, more than any other program I have set to start up

    2) The GUI is ugly and outdated

    3) The program glitches sometimes and hangs, doing nothing, but using a lot of CPU, until you end task

What I did was make a batch file that loads the program, waits for it to load, then kills the task, and refreshes explorer (to clear the sys tray icon) and I added this batch file to the startup instead. So it starts and activates the fan control and then closes. I'm pretty happy with this solution. I still can't control sys_fan but this takes a lot of noise off of CPU_fan

Anyway, here's the batch file content if anyone else is interested.

    @ECHO OFF
    ECHO Executing Fan Controller...
    START /MIN "" "C:\Program Files\Gigabyte\ET5\ET5SC.exe"
ECHO Waiting for App to Start...
    PING -n 25 127.0.0.1>nul
    ECHO Closing App...
    taskkill /f /im "GUI.exe"
    Echo Refreshing Explorer...
    taskkill /f /im "Explorer.exe"
    START "Explorer" c:\Windows\explorer.exe
    ECHO Explorer Restarted.

Handy little batch file, , worth keeping, for gigabyte utility users, - thanks X-Raider, When I come across another gigabyte board, I will try it.:cool

Is your system fan the small one ?
