HELP --Stop Error--

I got this error message Stop 0x0000007B or INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE on Dell’s win2K Pc and now doesn’t want to boot. Can somebody help me with this. If is boot virus , can somebody tell me from where to download scan and clean utility on floppy?

Hello,

The first thing you should try is :
-get a Win98 Boot Diskette ; I can recommend you this one. It will istall W98BD on a new/good floppy disk.
- boot your PC with this W98BD and type at prompt as follows:

A:\>fdisk /mbr hit ENTER key to run FDISK.EXE
- eject the dikette and restart you PC and cross you fingers, of course

Did anything happened before the computer started to show INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE ? (Was any changes made?)

 

No , nothing was change. I just restart and I get this blue scren with stop error message.

I'm having a similar problem. I tried the fdisk thing but fdisk/mbr was an invalid command for me. I did fdisk instead and I could delete my NTFS partition but wouldn't let me go ahead and reformat that drive completely....hrmmm. Do I have another option other than throwing my old HD out the window.

 

Before doing anything hasty, you should understand what stop 0x7b means.

Stop 0x7b=Inaccessible Boot Device, which in English means the IDE controller(s) could not be started. This could be because they are disabled, the atapi service is disabled in the registry, or the driver is missing or incorrect.

Are either of you using a PCI hard drive controller, RAID, or SATA?

 

I’m not sure what hard drive controller I have. It is 18GB hard disk on Dell PC . Can it be disabled by it self? I didn’t make any changes in the registry or install new hardware. I think maybe is some kind of boot virus, but I cant clean it because I can boot the PC. I have system floppy but all antivirus programs that I have are too big for floppy or can not be run in DOS mode. Only way to fix this is to reformat the hard disk and create new partitions?

No I don’t have on this PC. This software can cause some problems like this?

It has Win2000 Pro and I have that CD(Win 2000 Pro)

 

Ok.

Boot to it, and go to recovery console.

Then, run this command:

listsvc

Look through the list for Atapi

We want to know what it says for startup type. Just post any info you see about it.

 

Ok. I will try this on Monday. (Problematic PC is at my office and I’m at home now). I tried recovery disc, but it didn’t allow me to reformat existing partition and I didn’t try with deleting existing partition. I will try recovery console and listsvc command. This command will list the services and drivers available on the computer right? I will post any info that I will get. Thanks for your help .

 

Thats exactly what it does. It lists software and driver services and their start states, in alphabetical order.

 

I tried typing Listsvc using Recovery Console but nothing happened. It just transfers me in new DOS prompt without any list. I tried to type DIR and I get “An error oceured during directory enumeration” . I don’t know what going on. Any help is more than welcome.

Filesystem damage.

Run chkdsk /r from rcon at this point.

Once it finishes, you should at least be able to view direcotry contents.

 

When I try chkdsk /r I got this message “The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems”. I also try to install win on existing partition , but without any success. What I should do next deleting partition or ?

 

Well, unless somebody knows of a third party utility to fix this, I only have one alternative left:

Repartition, format, and clean install Windows XP.

The unrecoverable error generally means that either the filesystem is damaged beyond repair, or the hard drive has croaked (bad sector(s)).

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

 

Me again J. I deleted exciting partition , create new one and reformat with NTFS and after that I got new stop error message:
Stop: C0000218 { Registry file failure}
The registry cannot load the hire(file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\Software
Or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent or not writable. Does this mean that is hard disc failure?

That, or, the ram is bad.

I would run memtest from this website and if it comes up clean, I would suspect the hard drive.

Now that you have reformatted it, run chkdsk /r from rcon and see if the same error comes up as before.

Now I was able to run chkdsk /r. went thought 50% and find that volume contain one or more unrecoverable problems. So I guess this mean throw your HDD through the window J or there is another option to fix it some how?

 

What brand is the hard drive?

We may be able to low level format it.

 

it is Maxtor 2B2oH1 on Dell Dimension. Ithink it is 18 GB...

Check this out. It will allow you to low level format and/or run diagnostics on the drive.
