Hello ... I have been trying to get to one of my regular sites for weeks but when I tried I get this message....
    The connection has timed out

The server at <site edited by administrator as not appropriate for these forums> is taking too long to respond.

    * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
    moments.

    * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
    connection.

    * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Now I know for a fact the site is not down ... today while visiting my mom I tried on her computer and had no trouble ... I have firefox and IE6 .... my mom has IE 6. I've had no problem using firefox or IE to get to this site before ... what's the problem?

Anyone have any idea what I can do to correct this ...

You are correct in that the site is not down. It is also not appropriate for these forums so I have removed the link.

Someone can help you work through the problem without needing the site URL posted up here :)

I merely pasted the message I was getting ... I thought it would be helpful in approaching the problem ...

The message will be helpful...nevertheless, the site is not required particularly as it is not appropriate. Nuff said.

I tried shutting down my firewall ... using free version of ZoneAlarm ... but got the same results ... I just don't understand what's going on ...how can everyone else get to the site yet I can't?

I used a web proxy and was able to connect to the site ... what does this indicate?

ip ban most likely. You been up to things you shouldn't be?

No ... if that were the case it would say "banned" under my username at the site ... and it doesn't

not always, its possible the server firewall banned you for some reason, wasn't really reffering to the forum software. might ask an admin.

A glitch on the sever's part do you think? Thanks ... I'll contact them now ...

Maybe their server changed IP's or something. In that case, someone who used to go there a lot may be hitting a dns server that still thinks it's at the old address. Whereas if you use a proxy, you'll be going through a different path and through different dns servers, same with your mom possibly. Or it could be an IP ban. You can know for sure wether or not it's a dns problem by typing in the IP address of the server rather than the domain name. On a computer that CAN access the site, go to cmd, type nslookup, then one space, then the websites domain name(eg. www.google.com). It should give a list of IP addresses. Either do another nslookup on your computer and see if the addresses match or just type in the ip address into your web browser. If it still doesn't work, that pretty much eliminates and DNS issues.

Though it may be unlikely, a web server changing IP addresses or a website changing hosts can cause it to become somewhat un-accessable to some people until all of the DNS servers get updated. It's rare, but can happen.

Hello ...:wave I tried connecting using the IP address instead but got the same results ... I talked with admin and they told me to use the cmd to do a trace ...they said it would show me where I'm losing the connection, but I don't know how to read it ... anyone here know how?:confused

:wave Okay I was shown how to do the trace and record it ... :cool I showed it to the head admin fella at the site in question ... at first he told me it was a problem on my end, then after taking a second look he felt it may be his server preventing some from connecting to the site so he is going to hand it over to his tech guy ...

... I realize mods here are afraid of being associate with this particular site,:D but I'm sure this could happen with sites that don't cause them fear ... so this information hopefully will be helpful to others ...
... therefore I will post the results once the problem is solved ... ;)

    Problem Solved

:wave I found a solution to my problem:D ... I couldn't get any help on the site end so some one suggested that I try a router ... and it worked!:p I can know reach the site in question without using a proxy ... so if you have this problem ... a router will be the solution ... ;)
