Can I introduce myself, my name is Brian and I am brand new to this forum. I have just registered today and I am very green on how to use the forum presently.

I have very limited knowledge about resolving badly infected PCs but I have visited this website on a few occasions to read solutions on other peoples PC problems and have to say that it looks just great.

I am putting this forward as a new thread although the answer may already exist within the threads library. I noticed that you have offered successful advice to other users about malicious trojans and viruses in the past and both my sisters seem to have picked up these problems on their PCs.

I have myself downloaded hijack this and ran a log on one of sister's PC on Friday 9th September 2005 and I am you if you would be kind enough to look at and offer some advice on what I can do to resolve her problem.

The symptoms are that on powering up her Window XP home edition PC, the desktop seems to go into a loop of throwing up connection dialog boxes with various suggested paths for connection. It did at one point show a background message of your PC has been infected with the trojan smitfraund.c but this no longer shows.

I have attached the Hijack This log as a text attachment and would greatly appreciate advice on what to do next.

All your advice would be greatly welcomed.

Please read the announcement and sticky threads. HJT logs should only be posted when requested. However, uUnless impossible we require that normal cleanup procedures be run before a HJT log will be requested or read. You have a load of problems so I'm going to add a few extra steps to my standard boilerplate for you to run.

    Please run the steps below.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates for all programs.
    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

Also download HOSTER and then follow the below steps.

    • Unzip Hoster to a convenient folder such as C:\Hoster
    • Run Hoster.exe, click Restore Original Hosts and then click OK.
    • Click the X to exit the program
Download this trial version of Ewido Security Suite
    • Install ewido security suite
    • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
    • The program will have a window come up. One of the buttons on the left is to Update. Click the Update button.and then Start the Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    • After it completes the update, click the Scanner button

Now exit Ewido. Now print the below instructions or save them locally because I want you do have no browsers opened and also have no connection to the internet (unplug your cable) while doing the below.

Okay, reboot into safe mode and follow the steps below. (If you have any problems at all trying to get into safe mode to complete these steps, just run them in normal boot mode and make sure you tell me when you come back.)

Open up Ewido and do the following:

    • Click on Scanner
    • Then click Settings
    • Under What to Scan? Select Scan every file
    • Then click OK
    • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will start.
    • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files that are infected. Leave the defaults selections (to Remove and backup) and click OK. To save yourself some time, you can select Perform action with all infections and then click OK. With the option to scan every file, a lot of cookies will be removed.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

    • Click Save report
    • Save the report to your desktop or anyplace you will be able to find it to upload here.
Reboot into normal mode and reconnect to the internet.

Come back here and post the Ewido Scan Report.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps below:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

Chaslang I only managed to get the first 4 items actioned on the READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING done.

I could NOT progress with doing the online scan using Bitdefender and RavAntivrus because my sister's PC would only allow accesss to a Web browser called "Premium Search". Whenever I tried entering any other website or search, it just automatically logged off. (Oh by the way she still operates using an internal 56k modem, a bit antiquated I know.)

Also I could NOT log on to her PC in Safe Mode with network support, each time I tried it just seemed to automatically switch to normal boot up. This in itself concerns me.

The only pluses are that I did manage to download and install all the recommended software from the READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING sticky thread but still a bit baffled at how Ad-Adware VX2 Cleaner Plug-In is supposed to work!!!!

Although desponded I am determine to resolve this issue but I really do need good help.

If you are using a 56k modem, you do not have a network so you should just boot in plain old Safe Mode. Just complete all the steps that you can complete and then post information on what you could and could not do along with a HijackThis log.

Explanation of how to install the VX2 Cleaner Plugin is on the download page.

Things are starting to look sunny again. I did eventually manage to run and install all the software suggested for earlier threads posted.

Please find attached the report after running updated version of Ewido Security Suite showing NO viruses found.

Also for the record a HJT log, as a final precaution, in case I have still something still lurking in the PC.

If it is all clear I will tackle my other younger sister's PC in the same manner and with more confidence.

    Thank You ChasLang. :)

You version of HJT has not been used for a few years. Please follow the directions I gave you and download the proper version and post a new log using it.

Also note your OS and IE are way out of date too and represent a major security risk. After we fix your current problems (and you have a few), you must address this issue.

Chaslang I have attached another HJT log dated 190905 for my sister's pc and hopefully it has been done using the most up to date version of HIjack This, as I just downloaded it last night from Major Geeks. So when you get a chance can you review it for me please?

Also I don't understand when you said that my Operating System and Internet Exploxer are way out of date. My sister's PC is using Windows XP Home edition and I have now switch her browser over to Mozilla Firefox which I done just recently, as part of the recommendations suggest on of the thread posts you recommended. Care to offer any further guidence on this?

You are using the original Win XP with no service packs or patches installed. Win XP is up to SP2 level. You are probably missing anywhere from 50 to 100 patches. Also while you may be using FireFox now, you will still need to use IE for some websites especially to get anything from Microsoft and your IE version is old and missing many security patches and service packs too.

You also have more than one antivirus application installed. You should use only one AV. Pick whether you want AVG or Avast and uninstall the other. Do that now before continuing!!

Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
On the page that opens, scroll down to Command Service (or if not found look for cmdService) ... then right click the entry, select 'Properties' and press 'Stop Service'. When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the 'Start-up Type' to 'Disabled'. Press 'OK' until you get back to Windows.

Next, go back to HJT and select 'Delete an NT Service" ... copy/paste the following into the box that opens, and press "OK":

    Command Service

If that does not work try entering the short name: cmdService

Now exit HJT but and do not reboot if it tells you it needs to inorder to finish the changes. We will reboot in a litlle while after restarting HJT to make more fixes.

If you are using WinXP or WinMe, make sure you have system restore disabled (per the tutorial).
For all OS types, make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Please run HijackThis and click on the "Open the Misc Tools Section" button on the open page. Then select "Open process manager" on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click "Kill process". Then click yes.
C:\WINDOWS\U2XhbgAA\command.exe <--- This may already be killed due to above steps.

After killing all the above processes, click "Back".
Then please click "Scan" and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://hsremove.com/done.htm

O23 - Service: Command Service (cmdService) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\U2XhbgAA\command.exe <--- This may already be fixed due to above steps.

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\U2XhbgAA <--- the whole folder
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\favdi <--- the whole folder
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\mkdu <--- the whole folder
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\ntpbmub <--- the whole folder

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\oyvhfih <--- the whole folder
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\apisvc.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\wintask.exe
    c:\ex.cab

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST). Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1) If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2) Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3) If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log. And tell us how things are working.

All right ChasLang, did everything as suggested in your last reply. Except I cannot boot my sister's PC is safe mode, there appears to be some problem here.

Other than that delete all the files suggested except
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\apisvc.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\wintask.exe
    c:\ex.cab

    as these were NOT showing.

Attached latest HJT log and wait further instructions.

    Many thanks

    Clear

Your log is clean from malware. Only the below remains (did you forget it last time):

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://hsremove.com/done.htm

It is not malware. It is just left over from running HSremove.

Are you having any other malware problems? If not, you need to start on the steps in the below. You need to get the Windows Updates immediately which is step 1 in the below link.
