help upgrading 1.1 usb to 2.0

Hello,
I have an early model hp pavilion pc w/win xp pro intel 800mhz processor,128 mb ram. Im trying to upgrade from a 1.1 usb port to a high speed 2.0 port.
I got some advice from the store where I was told to buy a 2.0 high speed hub and hook it up directly to the 1.1. I tried to do this and it did nothing performance wise.
Later I did a google search and found out that I need a pci card in order to upgrade.
But I have no Idea which card will work w/ this pc or how to install it.

Ofcourse you need an empty PCI slot on your PC

Well, I guess the guy at the store really knows what he is talking about?????

FYI: If the board is 1.1, plugging a 2.0 into it wont work because the usb controller for the port is still 1.1

If you have an open PCI slot, then it will work. The usb board will be 2.0 and when the system finds it, it will install the 2.0 controller.

How many ports do you want? You can get a card with more ports. Also, you can use the 2 port and plug your hub to it (the one the store told you to buy).
Look locally also, you might find what you want for a descent price.

It also depends on the operating system.

XP does NOT support USB 2.0, you must have SP1 or greater.

Windows 9x does NOT officially support USB 2.0, so you need to provide drivers.


If you look in Device Manager under Universal Serial Bus, it should say "Enhanced" if your hardware is capable of USB 2.0.
