    Hey Helpful one/s,

I was reading about removing file associations in Vista via Command prompt.
This has been several weeks ago - so don't remember the URL.

Just for experimental fun (!!) I went to the command prompt and ran the assoc command, I believe I ran

    assoc .txt=

Which dis-associated .txt files to open with notepad.exe
I then opened a .txt file using Open With > Choose Default Program... - and leaving the - always use the selected program to open this kind of file - check box checked - and choosing Notepad.

Okay - I am able to open .txt files with Notepad, by double clicking - that part of the association is fine.

What is missing - is when I am in Windows Explorer - and I go to file / new
or right click / and choose New - Textfile is not there.

I am assuming what I did with file association is what caused the issue - but I did not miss it right away - so I am not certain - but I think it is logical to
believe my little file association experiment is the cause.

I can live without this functionality but miss it - I am not wanting to re-install Windows - as this install is only 2 or 3 months (aprox.) old.

If anyone knows how to get the functionality back - I would appreciate the help.

    Thanks,

    Chronk

A system restore should fix it. It won't affect any of your personal stuff.

    Earthling,

Thanks very much for the reply.
I reset the restore feature when fighting alleged malware.
I think that Autoruneater was prompting a false positive on my D: drive
    which is my restore partition.

In case it was malware - I went ahead and removed the file.
I then disabled / then re-enabled my restore points.
I have other media for the Windows install. So would not have been able to restore to a time previous to my assoc handiwork.

After scouring the web - I finally tried removing the association again and then instead of the command prompt to re-associate, I went to
Control Panel > Default Programs > Set Associations > Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program.

I chose .txt, then Notepad as the default program.

BTW - This time I chose this program - URL below:

    http://www.winhelponline.com/articl...ociate-File-Types-in-Windows-7-and-Vista.html

I had used it before in a previous Vista install - as before
I accidentally opened a file and left the
"always use the selected program to open this kind of file"
    check box checked.

I don't know if that program made the difference in un-associating - or if it was how I re-associated it. But I am leaving it alone for now as it is all good.
