    hi,

    i have a toshiba satellite a45-s250 laptop. p4 28, 768 mb ram winxp pro.

my computer was running awesome for a while. no problems whatsoever. then all of sudden i noticed that when logging into xp... it took forever for it load. it used to take seconds... now it takes well over 2 minutes from logon to when the HD light finally stops glowing.

here is what i have tried...

    adaware full system scan
    spybot full system scan
ms antispyware full system scan and realtime monitoring
norton enterprise full system scan and realtime monitoring
removing stuff from startup in msconfig
    disk cleaup, defrag
wintasks to remove any non essential processes.
hijack this - everything non essential
    registry mechanic full system scan
and finally...... a system restore from at least 1 month before i noticed the slowdown.

so i am stumped...nothing above helped. do i just need to reformat my drive? or is there some sorta program i can purchase that does a full system cleanup or any step i can take or missed in trying to clean out my laptop?

    all help is really appreciated.

    This is worth a try,

I suggest first go to the below URL site and read the instructions then use to verify/repair your XP installation as shown!!
To enable to use this programming I understand you must have the Windows XP program updated with “SP2 Updates”. To verify this Right Click My Computer view the details in the System Property Box.

    Also Download the CCleaner.
This a very easy safe program to use and the "Cleaner", however be carefull and make sure when using "Issues" that you must use "Save" of the "Register" files as shown for deletion.

    Hope may help

Also suggest you do not run MS and Norton firewalls together. One firewall and one AV program should be the rule - else they fight each other to your disadvantage.
    Cheers

i followed the steps exactly for the sfc scannow program. i could not get it to work, it keeps asking for the xp cd. i am running sp2. i changed the registry values to c:\ and copied the i386 dir to c:. still didnt work. i changed the NT setting as well, then changed them both back to d:\ and still nothing.

i ran ccleaner and it didnt help.

i run norton corp...so it doesnt not have a firewall option.

i also removed my computer off my work domain, thinking that maybe its taking a long time b/c its busy with the network...but that didnt work either.

another thing i thought about trying was removing all the profiles in the computer and creating 1 new one. maybe my profile is corrupt????? but i do have another newer profile on my machine and it also takes a long time to load. is it possible that my main(possibly corrupt) profile is loading stuff even though i am logging in on a different profile?

this sucks!! i looks like i am going to have to reformat. i am going to invest in ghost b/c i cant stand spending hours doing this again..especially when i was keeping my computer in tip top shape and this still happened outta nowhere.
