I just installed windows xp home sp 2 and after the install I could not connect to the internet. I have dial-up  when i try to connect it says "connecting" but you cannot hear the dial tone and it doesn't connect. I am running McAfee Security Center. I did not have this problem before the install, I went back to my last restore point and am able to connect to the internet with no problems.

Do i really even need sp2?

    thanx

HI, If you are pretty expert in computing it might not be neccessary. Did you switch the SP2's firewall off as it might be stopping you connecting.

Mcafee security centre consists of a number of individual programs do you have them all or are you referring to the antivirus program only. MOst people shelter behind a firewall nowadays but most have to be told what the trusted programs are before they will allow them to connect to the net.

JUdging from your post it might be SP2's firewall causing the problem. You could install SP2 but after installing switch it's security programs off.

I use Mcaffe antivrus and also Outpost firewall and have had no trouble except the security center is switched off.

Thanks Mal1930...I am running McAfee virusscan, firewall and spamkiller. I did disable the firewall that came with the service pack. I also checked my list to make sure that internet explorer was allowed full access which it is. I was a computer geek during the rule of TRASH 80s and commodore but I slipped away for a long time now I am trying to get back up to speed and it is turning into a long battle...things have changed so much...LOL

Hi, We are well met as I am the same. Those days seem so long ago now.

I am sorry I did not help. I was iffy about SP2 most newsletters suggest it is to help the newcomers to computing as with the update they at least have some protection.
