Hi, I ran the windows repair program from "tweaking.com" on my Windows 8.1 laptop and now rather than simply a little slow, nothing works properly. I first noticed when trying to open Internet Explorer, it will come on but then flash right off. Later I tried to use the Media Player and though it appeared to play, there was no audio (I checked mute/volume etc.). I decided to just do a System Restore BUT it will not do a restore... I have tried it from the Safe Mode and from different set points and nothing works. I don't know if there are any other things not running properly. Can anyone help?

Did you create a back up of the Registry and a System Restore Point before running the Tweaking Program fixes? You should be able to get back to the position before using Tweaking via Windows 8.1 recovery options.

You also never do lots of tweaks at once. You do a few and take notes on what you changed and test the computer. If something isn't working, you undo the changes either by restoring the registry or using your restore point.

Thank you. I have tried to do the system restore at all available points and it will not do a restore. It also will not allow me to update Windows.

I ran the Windows Repair program according to directions but it seems to have ruined it. I thought it was a reputable program. I am now unable to run the system restore , update windows or turn the Windoes defender back on. Perhaps the program is actually a virus?

    No, it is not.
    In Step 5: Backup...
Did you create a Registry Backup as Recommended?
    There is a Restore option.

Yes. But when I try to do the System Restore I says it failed. Unless there is a restore option right in the program that I have missed?

Should I try to run the program again? I am afraid of making things worse.

The Restore option is also available in Step 5.
95% of what the program does is registry related.

I am not sure I was clear enough. I did create the restore point. I have tried to restore several times as well as using other restore points .

Thank you. I will try that in a bit. Right now the computer is doing the check disk repair .it actually seems that is frozen as well .

Did you try to restore from within Tweaking.com Windows repair?

I am about to noW. Thank you.

It is restoring the registry but telling me there is not a system restore point.

I am wondering if I should do the windows system refresh.... Is that a better choice?

    This is the better option.
I'm guesstimating your Windows installation is corrupt.

After I did the registry restore, the Internet Explorer , Windoes media player and defender are working but it is still not letting me do windows update due to an error

    Ok, we're getting somewhere.
    1. Run Tweaking.com Windows Repair.
    2. Go to step #5 and do a Registry Backup.
    3. Go to Repairs, click Open Repairs, and unselect ALL repairs.
    4. Select ONLY Repair Windows Updates.
    5. Click Start Repairs.

    Ok... Doing that now ...

It is saying that the last scheduled backup had errors or failed. It also is telling me that the system refresh that I tried earlier failed.

    That's why I posted...
And this program doesn't replace any Windows files.

Continue with post #18. You can always restore the registry.

It is restarting. Is there something that will resolve the new problem of not being able to set a restore point, system restore or the system refresh? what would make the Windows Installation corrupt? Windows 8.1 came with the computer.

There are 101 reasons why Windows become corrupt.
The files on the recovery partition or in the restore points should theoretically not become corrupt. If that happens, the HDD has corrupt sectors or is failing.
    Backup your important files asap.

Ok. Thank you. I don't know why this is happening . I do very little on this computer beyond some writing, and going on Facebook. Is there something I can do on my own or am I going to have to take it in to a tech place?

Lets first go back to Tweaking.com Windows Repair.
Did you run step #3 (both) & #4?
If you did, what was the outcome?

  26. Seaswept

    Seaswept Private E-2

I did yesterday before running the last step. That is when all the problems with the computer began. I ran step 3 once already today. It ran perfectly fine before all this started other than a bit slower than I thought it had been previously. I can run them again but am worried of making it worse . The Windows Update fix didn't work. If it would let me just restore to before I ran that program but it won't do that either.

Have you tried Opening CMD with Administrators rites and running sfc /scannow
It will scan your system files and if it finds corrupt files tries to repair them.
    Keeping my fingers crossed.

Except I don't know what that is or how to do it..... Is that from the "run" box?

Thank you guys for your help. I am now waiting for the Scan disc check thing (I restarted it) to work

try right clicking the windows box / bottom left icon and choose Command Prompt (Admin)
    That will open a black screen window and type sfc /scannow {then enter}
It will take about 10 minutes but its worth waiting...

Ok, thank you. I will as soon as this other scan thing is finished .

  33. Seaswept

    Seaswept Private E-2

The scan disc thing has been sitting at 10% complete for 15 min. Is that normal? Should k stop it and run that other suggestion?

  34. Eldon

    Eldon Major Geek Extraordinaire

    Let it finish.
It's scanning for file system errors.

I am concerned if is frozen in the scan as it was in the system restore. It has been running at the 10% for well over half an hour now.

  37. Eldon

Then Windows will have to be repaired or re-installed.
Do you have a Windows 8.1 disc.

well, it is saying that the windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. I wonder why using the tweak thing would kick all this off. Is there anything I can do now?

  41. Eldon

    Eldon Major Geek Extraordinaire

It's not because of Tweaking.com Windows Repair.
The program warns if Windows files are corrupt, running the software can worsen matters.
    That's why steps #3 & 4 are so important.
Hopefully someone can advise where to download a Windows 8.1 iso file to do the repairs.

I followed all the steps exactly speak soon they said. The Scan disc check came back fine before. I hope so too . So disappointing . Thank you for all your help. Oh, it looks like I may be able to download that from Microsoft but I will have to go buy a flash drive. I am too worn out to do anything else today, I will give it a go tomorrow. Thanks so much for your help.
