help windows update gone real bad HELP!@!@!

its my new pc i just download the updates for it from microsoft windows update when it was done it asked to restart so i did but now i get a error after the windows opening sound explore has done a illegal something cant click on close or do anything but restart and same thing but when that error comes up the mouse turns sideways and the mouse movement is worng move mouse up it goes to the side move mouse to side it goes up or down it does work in safe mode but i dont know what to do can anyone help me?

i am running
Windoes 98SE
512mb dual channel ram
P4 Celeron running at 2.7ghz
Asus mobo dont see how that matters tho
by the way i am on old pc now and if i do have to format is there someway i can get the files off it so i can save my drivers for video sound and so on?

 

Unfortunately, Windows 98 doesn't have many recovery tools, unless you like playing around in DOS.

The easiest way is to install Windows over itself, therefor preserving all your files.

Don't format, or you will lose the drives entire contents, just install over the current installation.

(If you are good with the file system you can try System File Checker but the above is easier and more likely to succeed)


EDIT: Forgot to add, first thing I would try is to boot up in Safe Mode and go to Add/Remove in Control Panel and see if the updates are listed so you can uninstall them. It might not fix the problem but it's worth a try.

 

i allready tryied to reinstall windows over its self but did not work same thing is happening i will try the add/delete thing in the morning its 2am and i need some sleep so i dont through it out the window lol

 

If you do post back, try to include the exact error message and someone might have a suggestion for you.

 

the error message is "this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" and in the the top of that little window it5 says explorer befor you can do anything it locks up now

 

ok this is where i am so far safe mode was a bust so i thought what about me have it in safe mode run msconfig and have it do a dig startup mode and it worked so i am now burning everything i can and i am giessing only way to fix is a freash install thanks for your help and i will be back when its done tell then later

 

@!#$@!# $@!$@!$@!%#%$#@^ microsoft fresh install of 98se and now its giving me a new error and it locks up still man i need xp or something i think i'm now ready for a update lol the error is "msgsrv32 an error has occorred in your program" it shows 2 buttons "close" and ignore" what should i do?

 

Well if you can't get 98 going then I wouldn't like your chances with XP.

Anyway, msgsrv32 is the 32 bit message server and it's responsible for vital things like Plug n' Pray and driver startup etc.

Anyway, yes, it's either the hardware or the driver.

Make sure you are using the latest compatible drivers for all your hardware.

The link I supplied has all the info.

Miss any step and it won't work. You have to thoroughly follow every suggestion.

 

well guess what i went into the bios and i disabled the on-board sound and it started up just fine no errors so the on-board sound was messing up my pci sound card make it crash now i wish i would not of formated lol
