Help! Windows Vista won't start unless in safe mode!

So I've been having a weird issue. I double clicked to open a file and it eventually timed out and froze then everything froze. Ctrl+Alt+Del didnt work. Rebooted. All I get now is a black screen and a mouse pointer that can be moved but nothing to click on...there is just black.

I can start it in safe mode and safe mode with networking with no problems.

This is really frustrating.

Do a system restore. That sounds like the easiest quick fix to your issue. I, personally, don't know what is causing it. What file did you try double clicking on? What was running in the mean time? What's your systems specs?

 

I tried system restore and it did the same thing. Which can't be good.

All i was doing was clicking on an .avi of some wrestling match (which has been on my computer for years so it wasnt just downloaded)

Google Chrome was running at the same time, thats about it.

My system is: Intel Core2 Extreme CPU 3.GHZ 8GB RAM 64bit OS

This link has the solution you are looking for. It might take a little reading but from the portions I went over most of it is pretty legitimate. (Not just some Geeksquad graduate claiming to be a guru of all PC's)

If you tried those and still no avail, we can try a couple of other things I have in mind. For now give those a shot, looks like it's worked for many others.

I edited the original post... lol, sorry I forgot to post it. It's getting too late for me and my coffee well is running dry. :sadface:

 

So it works fine if i do a clean boot (aka only microsoft programs and essentials)

so it must be some 3rd party software at startup..
