Im guessing you aint going to fix it as very rarely hard drives are the same size as what you think ppl are even sueing over it
    look here

Although it looks like you have been rather hard done by my 80gig shows up as 78gig
is that an oem box with a seperate restore partition have you ran scandisk its found a few of my gigs that have gone missing in the past

Sorry stumpy what i meant was is it a OEM built system like Compaq etc
as a lot of those have a seperate partition in which they store the OS etc and you dont get a windows cd just a recovery cd which reinstalls off that partition

HDs once formatted don't show the full size of the disk,

The shown size figure is the amount of data that the drive can store, after you have formatting. Most ( well all of them ) hard drive companies, calculate disc capacity based on the assumption that 1 megabyte = 1000 kilobytes and 1 gigabyte=1000 megabytes. Where as thats not strictly true as their is two different number systems for calculating storage space the OS tends to use 1MB is equal to 1024kb, so after formatting the size is always lower than the advertised size of the HD.....

Storage Capacity Measurement Standards from Seagate
    http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/tb/capacity_measure.html

also as GLS says above company's like Compaq and DELL use some of the space to add a recovery partition so you can recover your PC to a NEW just bought stage if something goes drastically wrong.

Hard drive manufacturers market drives in terms of decimal (base 10)

capacity. In decimal notation, one megabyte (MB) is equal to 1,000,000

bytes, and one Gigabyte (GB) is equal to 1,000,000,000 bytes.

Programs such as FDISK, system BIOS, and Windows use the binary (base

    2) numbering system. In the binary numbering system, one megabyte is

equal to 1,048,576 bytes, and one gigabyte is equal to 1,073,741,824

    bytes.

Simply put, decimal and binary translates to the same amount of storage

capacity. Lets say you wanted to measure the distance from point A to

point B. The distance from A to B is one kilometer or .621 miles. It is

the same distance, but it is reported differently due to the

    measurement.

    Capacity Calculation Formula

Decimal capacity / 1,048,576 = Binary MB capacity

    Example:
    A 40 GB hard drive is approximately 40,000,000,000 bytes (40 x

    1,000,000,000).

    40,000,000,000 / 1,048,576 = 38,162 megabytes

In the table below are examples of approximate numbers that the drive

    may report.

    Decimal Binary MB Windows Output
    20 GB 19,073 MB 18.6 GB
    40 GB 38,610 MB 37.3 GB
    60 GB 57,220 MB 55.8 GB
    80 GB 76,293 MB 74.5 GB
    120 GB 114,440 MB 111.7 GB
    160 GB 152,587 MB 149 GB

What does it matter whether I post the link where this came from?????
