help windowsupdate and shutdown

i've got this problem. two problems, really. i can't seem to get windows update to work. my internet security settings are all ok and i have ie 6.0.
when i get to update website i don't get an error message, but i don't get any message. i've left it open for ten minutes before and nothing happens. i think it might have something to do with me accidently deleting all the folders in my "temporary internet files", but i'm really not sure, it just says "searching for updates for your computer or something.
another thing. for some reason i'm shut down and start up slow. it goes to shut down screen , "saving your settings", yatayata, then it says "windows is shutting down" for like 30-35 seconds and it's the same for startup. it used to take like 10-15.
any tips or help would be much appreciated. thanks

 

Hello there.
First, what Operating System are you using? How much memory (RAM) do you have, and how fast is your processor?
Second, have you downloaded Ad-Aware, and Spybot Search and Destroy, and checked for Spyware? They are both available in the Spyware section of downloads on the front page here at Major Geeks.
Start with that, and let us know what happens.

hi. i'm running winxp home, i've got 640 mb ram and processor is 2200.
i have those tools and i've run them before. my system is clean for spyware/addware.
now i really need windows update because in the past month or so my comp has restarte and said a serious error ocurred and that i ned to get a critical update, which i can't get becasue of this problem so plz help me thanks.

 

Sounds like spyware to me, too, eclayton.

Another possibility is that your firewall settings are too strict.

 

i just scanned with spybot and addware and shut my firewall off. i tried windows update and it still doesn't work. i also reinstalled ie6 and that's all still doesnt work i really need those updates. thanls

 

you dont have spyware, they relocated.

Say what?


No relocation has effected going to Windows Update from the shortcut in the OS.

That merely redirects to v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com anyway.

 

problem solved.
