A few years ago I bought a very cheap and very generic camera but quickly lost the installation disk. I had to search for hours trying to find the obscure drivers for it.

I still have the camera and I don't use it at all. But, I've decided to use it as a webcam which I tried a few times on my desktop and it worked.

Now, I've moved the camera over to my laptop and added the .dll file to my system32 folder. I've loaded the driver with 'regsvr32' in Run and restarted my computer.

Now I'm at the Hardware Update Wizard to add the driver to the camera but when I search for the driver in system32, windows can never find it. Even if I move it to the desktop. And when i try to select the driver manually, it doesn't appear on my list of drivers at all.

If I have added the .dll to the correct folders, how do I then add it too the camera which appears in the Device Manager with no loaded drivers.

*sigh* this is my only alternative to buying a new webcam which I really can't afford right now.

    Laptop:
    HP pavilion dv1000
    Windows XP home edition
    Service Pack 2
    Camera Driver:
    Sp5x_32.dll
    Camera Brand:
    SunPlus, Digital Concepts 3.1 megapixel
*thats all the info i can find on it*

    Hi

Is this your camera http://www.sakar.com/productdetail.aspx?id=371&categoryid=170 if so the drivers are listed on the page, as I dont know what obscure drivers you have installed, but always best to use the makers, so in device manager if a driver is listed for this camera, uninstall it, then reboot and re-install the one above.

Do when installing it be logged on as the Admin.

This isn't the same model but It's basically the same camera with a different case. I did everything you said but nothing has changed with the Hardware Update Wizard. It searches for the drivers but never finds them and when I try to manually choose the drivers to be installed, they have me choose from a list but the new drivers are not on there. I just want to add the drivers to the device and the drivers are definitely on my computer.

The drivers I took from my desktop worked fine on it but, on my laptop, the Hardware Update Wizard wouldn't let me add those either.

    Hi

So you do have working drivers for this on one desktop PC? does that PC run same version of Windows?

Lets see if we can can backup the drivers from your other desktop PC into a working driver folder, use this Driver Backup app http://majorgeeks.com/DriverMax_d5260.html and once installed and run look for the camera software driver and only choose that driver, untick all the others, and then click Next and choose a location to save the files in the dfault one is ok as it allows you to open the saved location up at the end of the process.

Save that folder (likely called media) and then transfer to your other PC and follow the below steps

Open Hardware Wizard and at the point it asks you to choose from the list, their should be an option for Have Disk, choose that and then browse to the location of the folder with the driver files and then follow the prompts.
