help with a processor problem

    i was wondering if i could put a 500mhz intel celeron pro on a gateway2000 E-3000 mobo the pro that is on that mobo is a intel pentium 166mhz can i do this or will i have a problem like a fried mobo and pro i want to do this because the computer with 500mhz is a compaq deskpro sff series and as simple as i can put it it is a pos i just want to move whats good on it to the better but older gateway2000 E-3000

    I don't think you will be able to, due to the fact that the celeron is proberly a different socket, and the motherboard won't support the 500mhz chip.

    they look the same that is why i am asking and they do fit but i dont want to fry mobo for dinner

    Well even if they are the same socket the chances are the bios won't support the 500 mhz chip and there could be ram problems also, It won't fry the mobo if the sockets are the same but I doubt it will boot.
