Just got a Tablet pc from ebay. Everything seems to be great. However, sometimes while typing, the keybord freezes not allowing uses of the keys or mouse. the only way to use the computer is with the stylist. Sometimes a reboot will make it work again.

Not too familiar with this machine yet so could this be something i accidently hit on the keyboard, and is there a button to switch back and forth between keybord and pen?

Please help. I only have 30 days to return this if this is a major problem.

    Thanks
    Jeff

The computer is a "off Lease" only thing CD wise that came with it was a CD Envelop with 3 cds in it labled with majik marker "Disk 1" "Disk2" "Disk 2" No explination what they are for.

I see the links you provided have a list of drivers, one being a keybord driver. IS there any risk of going ahead and downloading and re installing the keyboard driver? Risk being to messing things up more or loosing any programs i have just installed?

Has anyone heard of this keyboard problem? Do you think it could be a Windows XP tablet problem?

    Thanks for your help!!!!

There is a problem with the onscreen keyboard messing up on some Tablet PCs. There is no problem downloading the correct drivers from Compaq. What I would do though is contact Compaq, and let them know that you have a TablePC without the discs and pay the $10 or so to order new legal discs. Then again you may have Corp. Discs with the device.

When you stick in the discs and look at them, do they show as the correct Compaq discs for Restore? Also does this thing have SP2 on it, or older updates?

Properties say; Windows XP Tablet PC Edition Vesion 2002 Service Pack 1

Yes the 3 discs say restore and when inserting the first one it wont auto run but it says cpq restore under the cd rom icon. but when opened it gives folders for tools

Do you think i should try the keyboard driver download from the link you gave me first or contact Compaq first about the restore discs?

    what do you mean?

run Belarc Advisor or do a msinfo32.exe from Run and it will tell you basics. When you go to Hardware in System, and look at the Device Manager what driver is it showing under "Drivers" for the keyboard?

Problem with some of the TablePC's is that SP2 can cause some problems, but with SP1, it just may be a bad driver causing the problem, either Stylist driver, or Keyboard.

From doing a search for the "TC1000 Tablet PC Freezes" brought me up some links that looks like freezing is the nature of these, and you have to do a "Hard Reset" by pressing the reset button on the bottom of the unit.

so you dont think the driver is the problem?

No, I think that it is a inherant problem with the device in question. It probably freezes when a "Poll" for a device is done (ie poll to check to see if tablet top is being written on, when keyboard is being used). If not using the Tablet top, see if you can disable it and see if the freezing goes away when using the keyboard.

Disable the tablet top or the POLL feature?

Would you know how i would do either?

so far it isnt a problem that happens just every so often and you can just live with it. It eventually does it every time you are working with the keyboard. which is a major problem,,

    Thanks for all your help!

The polling you can't stop, due to it is a IRQ, and most likely the Tablet top and keyboard possibly use the same IRQ. As for disabling the recognition of the tablet top, that would be a software setting.

Also, have you checked the end connection for the keyboard to make sure it is firmly plugged into the unit when using?

I know this unit keyboard is detachable but it came allready put together so i havent had it apart yet. So as far as i know its plugged it correctly.
Any advice on the soft ware setting you mentioned?

Let me put the question out there for others reading this, Does anyone have this unit and have had the same problem, what did you do or is there nothing to be done?

    Thanks for all your help!!!

    Jeff
