Help with computer freezing while printing

Hello. I am running windows xp pro. It seems that when I go to print it causes my microsoft word to freeze. If I restart my computer it seems to work ok, but before very long it does it when you try to print again. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall microsoft office, but that did not seem to help. When I click on the printers and faxes folder it will not come up. It also seems to be a problem when I try to print from my browser as well. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

I had this problem with an old printer on an old pc, with XP, nd found the cpu was maxing out-hence the lock up.
Amongst other things, I thought try it in another usb port- voila! solved - worth a try.

 

I do that and it definitely helps. I do have network printers. How do I get it to stop doing it though?
