I would like to use my second NIC port as a way of connecting a second computer without running more cable. Occasionally I help out family and friends and its a real hassle unplugging my cable to connect theirs then dragging out my wireless card for my PC because I damn sure ain't putting my network password on anyone else s PC. So anyway, if anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them....

    Thanks!

Use a router vs ICS if the machine is running Windows. Best way to connect across machines on the same LAN, or from a remote site is to use Teamviewer. Also, you should never connect your machine to a untrusted one if theirs is infected, and your computer is knowingly clean from any malware.

Not sure I understand what ICS is... I tried to bridge the two NIC's and I got an error message.(see below) I am definitely getting into strange waters here. So be easy on me...

When you are bridging, you are using ICS or "Internet Connection Service" as Microsoft calls it. It is not a good way of doing it, because the machine that is sharing the connection has to always be on. Better to go with a router when people bring machines over, but keeping them off of your network, so that they cannot infect yours if they have malware on them, as I mentioned before.

If you want to know more about ICS, the info is avail at microsoft.com.

thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I actually have a pc that I plan on putting windows8 on and want to share the connection.

But I have been curious about the second port for some time. Not sure what it would be used for, so I thought I would ask...

It would be used if you want a Linux Sniffer box, or Router. As for sharing, again not a good choice, especially with Windows, unless you are using the machine as a server or router. Even as a Server, you would only need one NIC. Now of course if the machine is going to be traveling with you, and you are unable to connect to wired LAN, you have the WiFi. That would be why having two types of adapters is good. We did that with a desktop that my daughter was using, since we did not want to run Ethernet to where the computer was at her mom's house.

As for 8, do not get me started on the new Windows 7 interface. I only have one machine in my house running Windows, and only use it when I need to load music from it on my iPhone. Otherwise it never gets turned on.
