I flashed my bios using msi's online updater. here it is.

    http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=downloadindex

after just flashing the bios I went into setup and it says my 2.93 dual core e7500 is running at 3.66?!?! You can adjust the frequency but it was on "auto".

any help? what should i do?

    thanks for any help.

Strange, what does the change log file on their site say? Does it address the issue that you were having to update?

    Hi

What Motherboard model do you have? but its possible that in the Bios menu their is an overclocking option, check to see if thats enabled or set to an advanced overclock option (I just know that the mobo I have ASUS can automatically overclock my CPU to various levels)

What are your temps at with it running at that level.

    50-51 c

what are safe temps with a stock cooler/heatsink?

sorry, i meant that i put the fsb down to 1100. i noticed that it was about 50-51 before i did that though. odd.

i really would like to know the safe temps. dont want to ruin it, you know?

at "auto" it was running at 1666 fsb? weird.

    Hi

Those temps are ok with stock cooler, if hitting 60c+ then your a little too high, but most CPUs will hit 70+ before causing issues.

Just read your mobos manual and no options like mine to change overclocking, so I would be tempted to reset CMOS (your BIOS) to default settings then re-enter any custom settings you have, to reset the BIOS just with PC off and carefully, pop the BIOS battery out for 10mins then pop it back in. Or on section 2-29 of the manual it shows you how to reset the bios with the jumpers. *but only do this if you really need to as it may not change anything, all I was thinking is when flashing the bios the settinsg maybe a little screwed up*

So I would monitor temps for a while when using your PC normally to see what max you get, http://majorgeeks.com/Core_Temp_d5665.html

ok. i did a benchmark with resident evil 5. while the monitor was running. i have it back to running back at 1666mhz to give me 3.66ghz. the highest i got was 55c. is this ok? if i can run it like that with stock i'll do it.

    Hi

If you gained a max of 55c when running a benchmark then if the benchmark (dont know that one) stressed the CPU then 55c is ok with stock fan, just monitor it for a while.

I would also drop MSI support an email and ask them about this BIOS update and tell them what it caused.
