help with hard drive

    can anybody tell me if there is any difference in 2.5 hd's.
    i'm trying to replace a toshiba that my prostar laptop tells me it cannot read.
    any clues?

    First of all, welcome to Major Geeks.:) ;) :D :cool:
    I'm not sure what you are getting at. :confused:

    2.5" drives are the same outside physical dimensions.
    The main differences are whether the drive is a SATA drive or an IDE drive.
    The easiest way to tell is to look at the connector.

    An IDE connector has a 40 pin (actually 39) connector. 1 is missing so it can only be inserted one way. The connector is 2 rows of 20 pins (less 1) to make 39.

    SATA connector is completely different, much smaller. I can't describe it to you as the laptop I am using has a SATA drive and I can't check it out while typing this reply.:D

    Well for complete accuracy a 3.5" IDE HDD has 40-pins but a 2.5" laptop IDE HD actually has 44 pins. The additional 4 pins of the 2.5" drive are in fact the power connectors.
