    I've got a few problems..

My FTP was working.. I restarted and now i can't connect because my FTP IP changed... how can I stop the IP from changing on my pc ?

and norton internet security 2004 wont let people connect to the ftp if the firewall is on.. I tried looking for a way to customize the program and let the ftp run but it wont.. so i always have to disable my firewall..

    help

I suggest www.no-ip.com to help with your IP problem.

Norton should allow the IIS process on port 21 through. I havnen't used norton's firewall but It would be a shame if it didn't let you customize it. Hopefully someone here who has it can help you with that part.

    You can't.

(Sorry, Kodo: didn't know you wre in on this one.)

Here's the thing: Your ISP has you set up so that you get an IP from an available pool of IPs the ISP has -- every time you connect. But there's no assurance that you'll get the SAME IP two times in a row. And it has nothing to do with settings on your machine.

Most broadband ISPs assign an IP that stays with the user for a fairly long time, simply because the user has the option on broadband of staying online ALL the TIME. But most dial-up services have randomly assigned IPs. First-come, first-served.

You could approach your ISP, but I doubt that you'll get a change in the policy. You just have to re-set your daemon server program every time you get a new IP.

I run as an FTP server occasionally, but I shut the server down when I don't need it. If I need to share a folder's files with someone else by FTP, I e-mail him the time slot I'll have the server up and running and the IP, and I give him his one-session password and ID to use. As soon as he's in and out, I shut the server down. On cable, my IP hasn't changed for a long time, but when I use my backup dial-up, sending the current IP to the invited users of my files is necessary, because I never know in advance what it will be.

The problem I think you're having with the firewall is that as soon as you launch the server daemon function, your server has to be open to contact initiated by other machines. It wouldn't work if that weren't true. So even though your other ports may be stealthed, your server can't be: you can't close its port or nobody could get into your machine. Your firewall is trying to keep all of your ports closed to incoming contacts.

But your firewall should be configurable so that your FTP server program can accept incoming calls and logins. Hunt around in the control panels. It's really easy in my ZA. My FTP server daemon is the ONLY program in my ENTIRE list of programs that has four checkmarks in its row of controls. That means that it's the only one that can BOTH SEND without asking for new permission, and RECEIVE contacts that weren't initiated by my machine. But every potential user of my FTP folder has to use his one-time ID and his one-time STRONG password, and he'll never get in again with those credentials.

SO. No access without login. No anonymous users allowed to log in, and logins must be identified by ID and STRONG PW. Short periods online as a server. And I HOPE you only open one folder to the server, and always put nothing BUT the files you want to share IN that folder. Might be better to use a separate DRIVE for the server, if that's an option.

Just some points I was thinking of when I read your post. A lot of this is stuff you know already, but other readers of this thread might need to see them in print.

I've run BPFTP Server w/ Norton FW

...I can't remebmber exactly how Norton's FW works but have you tried manually adding BPFTP Server to Norton's 'allowed' programs?
As per 'xflat''s comment -I have since switched to ZA Pro and all is well. -But BPFTP Server worked fine with Norton's FW as well.
As per Kodo's suggestion: in your situation you definately need a proggie like 'No-IP' to keep track of your IP changes.
In my (definately limited) experience: it sounds like a firewall issue.
I should also mention that norton firewall let me run my FTP on any port I wanted: I rarely served on port 21 and ran into no problems.
Wisewiz's suggestion that "The problem I think you're having with the firewall is that as soon as you launch the server daemon function, your server has to be open to contact initiated by other machines. It wouldn't work if that weren't true. So even though your other ports may be stealthed, your server can't be: you can't close its port or nobody could get into your machine. Your firewall is trying to keep all of your ports closed to incoming contacts." is consistent with what I've experienced running an FTP Server.
So try to play with the settings of your FW so it allows communication on the ports that you want -or choose a port for BPFTP and make sure that Norton isn't blocking it.

Have you tried changing the default port in BPFTP Server via: Setup>Main>General (listen on Port #)? -do you still get the same error with or without your Firewall up?
