Bear with me, I'm a beginner.

I'm creating a banner for my webpage that involves video game sprites, and I found the appropriate ones I needed on another site, but I need them enlarged. What kind of free program can I download to make them larger without getting stretched and losing detail?

no matter what you use you if you stretch an image it will always lose its detail because when you make an image it has a certain resolution. When you enlarge it or stretch it the resolution stays the same but becomes larger.

    neonemesis is correct

if you enlarge an image you will loose the quality and it will begin to show the actual pixels.

I do not think there is any program outhere that can do what you want even the best programs like photoshop cannot do it.
