Okay, so I downloaded the Ubuntu 7.10 ISO from the site, burned it, verified it, and ran it. I got the following errors:

    [ 593.999153] ata2.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen
    [ 606.0476770] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 0

They were repeated many times with different values, before the screen went completely black. What could be the problem?

I just formatted the thing and installed Windows XP, and made a separate partition for Ubuntu. I've tried burning the disk 2 times. I have no idea what's happening. Help? Thanks in advance

Ubuntu Forums said it is a problem between SATA cable and ATA.

He got a lot of errors that I didn't get, besides, how can Windows run if it's a hardware problem?

Try another version of Linux, contrary to popular belief, Linux comes in many forms that don't end with the letters 'untu'

Pardus, Parsix and PClinuxOS are just a few of the beginner friendly alternatives

Windows is already configured for both IDE and SATA drives.

You have to help Linux know what to find.

As are Gentoo and Gnoppix and Puppy good starting points.

Yes, not exactly what I would recommend to beginners rolleyes

Having earned my 'I installed Gentoo and retained my sanity' medal several years ago, I have to question whether all the hassle is worth it to get an optomised system. It's definitely an education, but the hours of compiling is very frustrating, especially if you haven't got another PC to use while you're waiting.

If you'd said Sabayon, which is based on Gentoo, then maybe I would have half agreed, but Sabayon is still a bit too buggy for my liking and the default install eats about 12 GB of HD space because of the mountains of software it puts on

Choice is good, bloat is not so good.

I failed my LFS (Linux from Scratch) exam though :zzz

Arch is a good compromise of both performance, control and minimal bloat, as you decide what goes into it. It doesnt even ship with sudo installed ;)

I'd check the MD5 hash on that Ubuntu download. Unless you have sparkly new hardware, I can't forsee that being much an issue, as Ubuntu is more cutting edge than many distros.

I had this same problem. I went into BIOS and manually set the Ultra DMA Mode on the drive to Mode 5. This fixed it.
