Just reformatted an old 98 machine, Compaq Armada E500 laptop.

Installed 98 then upgraded to Millenium.

Using an always on broadbank DSL connection, there is a DSL jack on the machine.

Can't get connected, can't ping, can't figure it out. Tried calling ATT but put on hold, finally gave up.

Anybody out there remember how to establish connection? The Internet option setup gives you either telephone or LAN options.

This is a silly question really but are the ethernet drivers installed?

Actually not silly at all. I just went to the device manager and I have a yellow mark by the PCI ethernet controller. Where do I get that driver? Would it be on the 98 or Me discs? It is apparently the problem.

Probably not, you should be able to find it online. You need to know the make and model of your motherboard. If you post it I'll have a look too in between buggering about with this laptop.
You could right click it and update the driver, unlikely but maybe.

And where do I find that information?

Actually, one more question. I see in exploring the Compaq that they have etherlink drivers for both Win98 and Win2000. But as I said, I installed Win98 and then upgraded to WinMe. So which do I choose? They don't have anything for WinMe. Is WinMe the same as Win2000?

WinME is not the same as Win2000 but hopefully the drivers will be close enough to work.
If they don't, download Everest Free Edition - http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181 - run it to find the actual manufacturer of the ethernet controller and go there to find the correct drivers.
(Ethernet controller would be under the network adapters or NIC.)
