I'm sure this question has been asked a thousand times but,,

I am running Windows Vista 64bit with DSL connection.

I have moved out to the country and my DSL is a lot slower out here because they have not got the updated lines out here yet.

Is there any tweaks or something that can be done to speed up my Internet Surfing?

    Thanks:

    Hi

Sadly likely not as Vista already does a good job of tweaking the TCP/IP Stack, CTCP and TCP autotuning window, so any other tweaks will likely not adjust much, although one you could try is TCP Optimizer (will need to right click it and run as admin) but only to really change the MTU figure, and this you need to get from your ISP as many of them have specific settings for your modem and connection, they should be able to either do it their end for you or talk you through it.

Other factors, is the PC or modem not plugged into the main phone socket but using an phone extention cable, if you have many other phones do all of them have DSL Filters plugged into them, old phone socket and wireing. Can test with just having the PCs modem plugged in with no phones to see if that helps, if possible and the PC and Modem is not by the main socket, move it to the socket and plug in to test speeds as externtions cause slowness and alternative to this is pop the modem into the main socket and run instead of a phone extention a Cat5e cable to the PC instead as they are quicker and dont degrade signal.

Other than that, to increase surfing speeds make sure you keep your Windows and what browser you use upto date, dont add any toolbars, if firefox, keep the addons to a minimum, check what security applications your using and make sure they are new and current ones. Keep your PC nice and clean and CCLeaner helps with this.

Maybe a call to the phone or ISP could reap rewards in them from their end tweaking your phoneline especially if its a noisey line, they can change some settings to see if SNR and Line Attenuation can be smoothed out.

If using IE7, then try IE8 as its now final release version and I found it quicker in Vista than IE7, but also try Firefox and the new Opera beta 10

(Opera beta 10, while I dont normally suggest this type of application to anyone I dont know skill level as beta's are not to be messed with as they are not final and can be prone to crashing etc, I think due to its new optimisation (Opera Turbo) for slow internet surfing speeds, and basically it compresses some of th emain factors in slowness, images etc, it maybe worth a try in your case).

For downloads if they are slow, use a download manager (Free Download Manager is Vista compat and works fine), helps and saves getting cut off mid way through a download and having to start again.
