This just started happening. I created a document in Word (microsoft office 97) and when I tried to save it I got an out of disc space message.
My c drive has 45GB free space. It saves to C:\Documents and Settings\...
    just like always.
I tried several test documents with the same results. I went to the internet and right clicked on an image selected save picture as, and it saved it just fine. There are also several wrd.tmp icons where I was trying to save the documents. My computer will not let me delete them. I get a message that they are being used by another program or user.
    Any suggestions?

A little cleaning might help. Try a couple of these methods:

    1. Empty cached & cookies. In IE: Tools -> Internet Options -> General -> Temporary Internet Files -> Delete
    2. Run the build-in Disk Cleanup Tool in Windows XP: Click Start - then point to All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> click Disk Cleanup
    3. Run CCleaner if you have that freeware program - ATF Cleaner - also freeware - will do equally well. MajorGeeks download here.

Try saving the file to a place other than C:\Documents and Settings and see if it saves.
Maybe there is a size limit on what can fit in Documents and Settings.

That could be part of the issue, and if the files are listed as in use, reboot your PC and then before opening Office, try to delete these tmps.

If they wont delete then reboot into Safe Mode ( F8 at boot ) and try and delete then, if that doest work and gives you same error of being used by another application then try one of the below.

    1. Pocket Killbox
    2. MoveOnBoot this one, once you dragNdrop the file or browse for its location, deletes the file on reboot, so any applications that have locked the file are not running so cannot lock it before deletion.. my fav!
    3. Unlocker

The official artical on that issue is this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/180905/ but I personally would not be using disk compression as you have enough free space, but I would try disabling your Antivirus application to test, plus what is your Antivirus software, if Norton then its Office Plugin can cause a few issues so is worth disabling http://support.microsoft.com/kb/329820

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try unlocker first and see if that does it.
I already booted in safe mode and was still unable to delete the files.

You did log in as Administrator when you tried to delete in safe mode? Also Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) can tell you what other programs you have running. And you can shut them down from there...

PS: What OS are you running?

Yes I am the admin on my machine. Windows XPpro. Task manager does not show microsoft office or word running.

These guidelines seems interesting. It's about a Microsoft Program "Process Explorer". The latest version is this one here.

Well it looks like the problem was the Avira anti-virus I was running. It is on the anti-virus download section on the home page.

    Hi

Read up on this and also asked question to security tech and they mentioned that in some PC setups with both Avira and Office, and that the fix is to get updated avgntflt.sys file.

Run an update of the program to make sure its upto date, does your saving from Word work, if not then download the updated avgntflt.sys file and once uncompressed copy and paste it to your Avira folder and allow it to copy over the old one and reboot.

As its not a normal zipped package, I have attached current one of the date of this post below.
