I was just informed that there was a new kind of MSN messenger available, I downloaded MSN beta 7.0 and the installation was successful. However, I have been unable to sign in or use this new messenger at all. Everytime I try to log in, it gives me this message: "Sorry, we are unable to sign you in to Messenger at this time. Please try again later. 80072ee7" I have checked and rechecked my passwork and log in name. I even deleted and reinstalled this program multiple times, but nothing has worked. When I downloaded this messenger, I lost my previous 6.2 version, and am now stuck with the ancient messenger that does not have an email function or any of the new features. If anyone knows of any ideas on how to fix this, PLEASE email me (jolly_good_88@hotmail.com) ASAP. I have been downloading off of the official MSN messenger site, so i know that it has nothing to do with that. Thanks guys!

    Welcome to MajorGeeks.

A lot of people have had problems with MSN Messenger 7 Beta.

The official public release is now available, and has been for a few weeks, so try that instead of the Beta version.

(If you want to revert back to 6.2 then do you have System Restore as an option?)

No i don't have system restore, and i don't think i have the actual beta kind...i am completely horrible when it comes to the technical stuff with computers. I have which ever 7.0 version is on the website MSN.com for MSN windows. Thank you for your reply, though. If you know what might be wrong with this as the public version not beta, then let me know

I see that you are a Yooper, so I'll type slowly so you can understand me better. Just kidding.... my whole family are yoopers.

Are you using a firewall? If so, what firewall? What version of Windows and what service pack level is it at?

I'm not trying to be pedantic here, but you stated, "I downloaded MSN beta 7.0" which is why I mentioned the Beta version.

The Beta version was available from the MSN site for download. The official public version was released a couple of weeks ago and replaced the Beta version on the same site.

Download the latest one from the MSN site and install it.

Set your firewall to allow access. The error code you supplied "80072ee7" is usually generated when your firewall is blocking access.

Hmm...i know that this might sound really dumb, but i think Norton Anti-Virus...that is the firewall we have. I don't know anything about firewalls. LOL. The error 80072ee7 is something with a firewall, but i have no idea how to fix it or change it or anything LOL. thanks if you can help! :0)

Norton AntiVirus is your antivirus program. Norton do also make firewalls but it would be called Norton Internet Security.

Windows XP with SP2 also has it's own built-in firewall, as well as many other brands, but regardless of which one it will have an icon in your systry, which is in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen with the time.

If you place the mouse cursor over it then it should tell you what each icon is.

Post back with exactly which one it is and someone will tell you how to allow access, or you can try yourself which usually entails double-clicking or right-clicking the icon and going into the settings.

Since you don't know what kind of firewall you have installed, I'm assuming that you never installed a firewall on your system. If you're running windows xp sp2, then you have windows integrated firewall, which by default allows msn messenger to connect and run properly. But if for some reason that is not the case then you can check to see if windows firewall is properly configured to allow msn messenger access. Do this only if you have windows xp sp2: Click start menu, control panel, security center, then click "windows firewall" under the "manage security settings for" area on the application. Finally, click the "exceptions" tab and look for msn messenger 7.0. It is configured properly if there is a box with a check mark in it next to it.

Now, if that fails, then try to remove the proxy settings if they are enabled. You can do this by: clicking the "Tools" menu in MSN Messenger and then "Options...". Then in the options screen click "Connection" in the list to the left. Next, click the "Advanced Settings..." button. You can try and uncheck all checkboxes in this screen to let MSN Messenger connect through a direct connection. If that does not work you can restore the settings again by checking the boxes you unchecked before.

Please let me know your results.

I've posted this on a couple of places before with mixed results/ responces, but will post it again to see if it sorts your problem. I installed MSN 7 and it ran fine untill i stuck Zone Alarm Firewall on the system, and then it connected about once every 5 times when i tried to log into MSN, with the same error you get.

After trawling thru alsorts of suggestions the one which i found to work was,

On your msn contacts list window (doesnt matter if your signed in), click Tools, Options, Connections, Advanced settings... and then DESELECT all of the boxes which are checked by default.

This worked perfectly for me, and a fairt few others in a different forum which i help manage, but is easilly changable back if it doesnt work for you.

If it does work, please post back and let me know, as im trying to establish a common thread with regards the spec on which it does/doesnt work :)

Thank you very much for all of your suggestions...i figured out the problem! I went to the tools on MSN and options then i unchecked all of the boxes under advanced settings. Then i went to my firewall thingy, i have norton internet security, and turned off "personal firewall" I hope this keeps working!
    Thanks!

DO NOT leave your firewall turned off!

Put it back on and allow MSN Messenger access.

Leaving your firewall off means your system is unprotected and sure to be infected.

Okay so how do i fix the settings for messenger? I went under Program control on my firewall, but it says that messenger already has permission and settings....so why didn't it work before?

Whoa, okay nevermind, i figured it out....i had a couple different messengers on my firewall list and one of the 4 MSN's were being blocked...that must be the one that im using.

Every time you install a new version of an application or update it, your firewall won't recognise it as it's a different version and therefore alien.

That is how it should work and is desirable.

Go into your firewall and delete the older versions of Messenger so you only have the current one listed.
