Old computer XP. New one is bundled with Win 7 Pro, and can up-grade to 8.1Pro. All the disks. Like the warranty. On sale when I bought it for $279.00. Bought 4 gigs of mem to up-grade.

It has Microsoft security essentials and defender. I enabled both. New to me, Win 7. As I have the option to go Win 8.1 with disks. Should I or not for now, go with 8.1? I want to transfer info from my old Xp to this one.

I'm used to Avira, Zonelabs-> new version is not as easy as the old version on allowing how to's on programs as servers. Super-antispyware and Malwarebytes. Firewall in 7 ok?

What is the best way to protect it? Any help? Still trying to figure out the permissions pop ups.

Defender will disable itself when you install an av. Since Security Essentials is an av, Defender will not run and that's good because you should not have two av programs running.

Don't install Avira because that would be a 3rd av program.

You don't need ZoneAlarm; the Win 7 built in firewall is better than the one in XP.

Superantispyware and Malwarebytes are fine to install.

I actually used paid Malwarebytes and SpywareBlaster on our Win 7 computers.

I'd stick with 7 rather than updating to 8.1.

I agree with JoeRay 12 about Win 8.1. On my older Dell Precision M70, Win 8.1 boots more quickly and did a better job of configuring my devices during OS installation. If your computer IS NOT touch screen enabled, Win 8.1 will default to the desktop instead of the Start screen (which many do not like, including myself).

Thank you all. Think I'll stay with 7 till I get info moved over from the XP. Not shure if 8.1 will transfer files from XP. I see that I can do it with 7.

Later on I'll go to 8.1. Might as well learn it before 7 gets to be obsolete like XP. And if Win 10 turns out as good as they are saying. Free up-grade is a good thing.
