rolleyes:confusedI've got an old HP Pavilion Notebook, Win98, that is password protected, can't even access bios.
I'd like to install a fresh 98 and donate the thing, but it won't boot or recognize the 98 CD.
I know on towers you can remove the battery or move some jumpers to clear, but how can I revive this one?

I know double posting is a no-no, but this is for charity. If I get this 'puter running, it will be donated to the Senior Center and some elderly widow will at least be able to exchange emails with her children/grandchildren. No lie! It's what I do.
Anyone know how to get past this password or reset the bios or allow me to reinstall '98? It's that or the thing goes in the garbage.:confused

Removing the battery resets the BIOS.

HP + notebook + password protected = could mean you are stymied without throwing $$$ at HP for their fix (and probably proving ownership, etc.). It's just as bad with some Dell notebooks :(, probably others too.

I was afraid of that, I tried taking it apart but I don't think I can do so without destroying. I do have a bootable 3.5" disk I'm trying tonight, but with little confidence, though the machine does look at the floppy drive when booting.
Looks like the thing is probably garbage.

Since at this point the HP nb is unusable, why not try and take it apart to locate the battery. Put a new one in while it is open because if it is running Win 98 then it is a vintage computer and the battery will probably die soon anyway.
I wouldn't risk destroying a functioning computer but anything that is non-functioning serves as a way for me to learn more. ;)

If you can't get it apart, at least pull the RAM. That might be useful in another notebook.

Thanks guys, wouldn't boot from floppy either. Previously did some googling on this and pretty much found the same answer, more than one reference to toss it, I did. Only had 64M memory anyway.
