    Hey everybody,

Long time since I posted but I need some advice.

I'm looking to run some cable to my second floor from my basement. An inside run is really not an option, neither is wireless, so I'm looking to run it outside with my cable wire on the side of the house. It will not be underground and will be exposed to sun, heat, rain, and snow. The cable will cross ac wires in the basement. The run will be about 50-75 feet. The basement end will end in a router and the 2nd floor end will end in a leviton plate with ethernet and cable. I currently have a 100 base network, but would like to upgrade to gigabit.

Now the questions. Do I need to go with outdoor rated cable? Shielded or unshielded? If shielded, how do i go about grounding it and at which end or both? Where is the best place to buy outdoor rated if need be? Can I stay with 5e or should I go with cat6?

I know I'll come up with more questions, but this is a good start.

    Thanks in advance.

And I just realized I posted this in the wrong forum. I didn't see the networking forum.
Can a mod please move this.

    Thanks again

Run the cable through a metal conduit (galvanized steel or even a copper pipe would do) and earth the conduit.
