Help With Proxy Server After Virus Cleanup

    Greetings Geeks.

I don't think this is a virus/malware post, despite it being an aftereffect, so I posted it here. Anyway . . . .

I removed a virus/malware infection from my computer. Quite honestly, Microsoft was the hero, removing what others could not. I had a Google redirect thingie going on. So, I am clean, but . . . .

It seems there are some proxy settings somewhere that need to be fixed after MS did it's thing. I reset proxy settings in Firefox, and it works fine now (quite snappy I might add). But, I tried Steam, and it can't connect. I figure it too is a proxy setting. I don't want Steam help specifically, but rather some help checking OS proxy settings before I troubleshoot individual programs. I don't want to fix this a program at a time, but rather fix it through Windows globally.

I do not use a proxy server, but somehow when MS removed the virus it seems to have done something with a network setting somewhere. So, how can I check system proxy settings via the OS? I am using Widows 7 32 bit.

I must admit I am pretty computer savvy, I can build em' and fix em, and troubleshoot many software issues, but I never learned network stuff so well.

    Thanks for any help.

    Hello,
Did you check the proxy settings in I.E. connection tab?

    Tools> Options> Connections> LAN Settings

Sorry, I should have specified - I am using Firefox 5.0. I did some research, and it seems this is a common, but complex, problem. But yes, IE does the same. I have yet to see if that will reset itself, that might give me some clues as to how to tackle this.

I have yet to fix this after about an hour of investigation and troubleshooting. . . .

Thanks for the tip, I would have had to ask about IE as I use Firefox.

That lead worked perfect, I don't use it, but setting the proxy settings via Windows fixed IE's connections, which is a good omen. Just before that, somehow I tweaked Firefox's settings into compliance. I don't know exactly what I did, but based on some research, I did it.

But . . . . it seems some of my Firefox settings are wonked up. I need to fix those, which is a separate battle, possibly in the Firefox forums.

I think you are correct, and that confirms my suspicions, that the virus I had changed internet settings, and the MS fix had to mess with them again to remedy the situation, and as a result, my internet settings are all over the place.

The good news is, my Firefox is slick like lightning. The bad news is, I have a few other issues to fix as a result.

Consider yourself "thanked" for the information. ;)

Under Firefox Options in the Advanced settings, select the Network tab and click settings in Connection. Select Use system proxy settings. This will use the same settings that were set in I.E.
