Help with Public IP on DSL? IP Routing?

Short version: Need to avoid firewall/port forwarding built into DSL modem. Give PC a public IP? IP routing? What IP/gateway do I enter into the modem/router's routing table?

    Long version:

"Use it or lose it". How true. Once upon a time I knew all of this stuff, but now it's fading :)

I have ADSL directly to a SpeedStream 5667 modem which has an internal router, NAT firewall, etc., and this modem is connected directly to a PC via ethernet. The modem was previously set up with DHCP for some reason, today I corrected it to use the static IP that it should have had.

The problem is that while some port forwarding works well (some games work perfectly whereas they didn't before forwarding), some other programs simply will not work as they're supposed to no matter what (Shareaza refuses to do anything beyond initial connection to hubs). The modem also limits to something like 30 ports total, which is grossly insufficient. Some individual games can require more than that!

A quirk with this modem is that it adamantly refuses to do automatic address translation if the firewall is set to anything other than the mode that blocks everything but standard services plus the 30 ports I can configure (which still don't seem to work for some programs).

I've been told that I need to set up IP routing. I disabled the modem's internal firewall, thereby killing my internet connection, then entering the sets of address/mask/gateway IPs that this joker said to try, and it still doesn't do anything. Can someone help please? Thanks

Looks like the SpeedStream 5667 is a combo Modem/Router.

These thingies main existence is to save the support call that the DSL ISP gets if the DSL authentication is done via software PPPOE. (http://www.ezlan.net/PPPOE.html) Otherwise it is a sub adequate Router.

In many of these units, you can turn the Router Off and use it a Bridge Modem. If you can do it with the SpeedStream 5667, you have to buy a decent regular Cable/DSL Router and connect it between the modem and the computer.

On the face of it, it sounded to me like what you wanted to do was put the computer in the DMZ as far as the router was concerned, but I saw no capability to do so with that piece of equipment. If, as suggested above, you can bring a separate broadband router to the party and use the Speedstream as modem-only, that might be the ticket.

(And yes, DSL hair-splitters, I know it's an ANT, not a modem.)

    Thanks for the replies.

Wonderful. So there's no way to route all traffic to the PC without another router? Several people have told me to use the IP routing that the SpeedStream modem/router provides access to via its http config. Are they wrong, or have they just given me the wrong settings?

The addl. router I got never did work, but I kept getting the runaround until the warranty had expired. Unfortunately new hardware isn't in my budget, and this lack of connectivity is really hampering my work :(

Edit: Static IP setup is no longer working, so I've gone back to DHCP :(

Cat5e, like I said if I disable the firewall, the modem ceases to perform NAT. Also, there is no DMZ that I can find.

Doesn't anybody know how to set up IP routing? Thanks you.

I thought it was pretty simple. I just need to know which settings to enter, then I can use this as a modem only so I can use my own router, or set up a Linux box router/firewall/DMZ etc.

It cannot work this way, fancy words sound good to humans, unfortunately the plastic boxes with the silicone pieces do not understand them.

The Router parts of the combos are very limited, if it does not do what you need to do, you have to configure the combo (if it allows) to be a transparent Bridge Modem.

Once it is a Modem only, you can use it with one computer, or you need an external Router if you have a Network.

Thanks for the reply. What should I look for in the settings? Efficient said to use IP routing, but that's as far as I can get without handing them my credit card.

Please, how do I set it to bridge only? If I just turn the firewall off, it disables NAPT and I lose all the connection between ISP and PC. I've tried also setting the PC to use a public IP, still no connection. What else do I need to change?

How do I set the 5667 “SecureRoute” Router into Bridge Mode?

You can try the above and it *may* allow you to set your PC up with the DHCP IP.

I have much more experience with PPPoA and PPPoE setups so what I've suggested may not work on a DHCP setup.

It would help to know all the settings on the current VC Page.
