    Hey everyone,

I just have a question about RAID 0, as i'm looking to buy a custom computer is set up with it on,

XFX NFORCE 680I MOTHERBOARD, and 2. 250 GB Western Digital drives

is this a good idea, i've read a little bit about RAID and i still dont completely understand, can anyone tell me if this is a good idea.

    Any help would be great,

    Thank you in advance,

    Rhonda

    Hi Lolli

The below are links I keep incase asked about Raid and the various types as at times its easier to link to already written explanations.

http://www.acnc.com/raid.html ( one of the best sources of what raid is )
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID

Basically in Raid0 (striping ) your using two equal model hard drives and combining them as one drive, this has the effect of slightly speeding up the retrieval of data, as the OS is rading the data which is split up between the two drives *see the 1st link above for how this happens*

Yes I have used Raid0 for near 6yrs+ and build all my PCs with the operating system and OS on the Raided C Drive, its particually good for the likes of video editing and does tend to load the OS quicker, but these days of SATAII drives and Western Digital Raptor (10k RPM Speed ) drives the difference is small.

Also another option is if you can get an WD Raptor Drive as the main C Drive and a second largish hard drive for storage of data files, downloads etc and not use Raid as WD Raptors as I mentioned are quick ( I use 2 of them in Raid, slightly more expensive than normal 7200RPM drives but I feel worth it )

One thing to note is Raid0 is not fault tollerant so its very wise to have a package like Acronis True Image to backup your main C: Drive in case of a failure or corruption of data.
