    hi there. i want to post for help on something i downloaded from the site, but not sure which forum. i want to make reg keys for these:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Vista_Screensaver_Ported_to_XP_d5384.html

    3 of the 4 came with text files with the info needed in the reg key, but i've never actually made one...well, i did, but that was about 5 years ago & just for practice so i could say i knew how to do it. i haven't done one since & forgot everything i knew.

    please let me know the best place to put my request & i'll do a full post with all the info.

    thanks,
    cake

    ok, i downloaded these XP ports of Vista screensavers from here:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Vista_Screensaver_Ported_to_XP_d5384.html

    they include .txt files for what to include in .reg keys so you can adjust the settings. i don't know exactly how to do it, so need your help. here is the info from the .txt files, exactly as they appear (Ribbons looks wonky, even to my inexperienced eyes; the rest have "comments" that i'm sure don't belong):

    Aurora
    Code:

    [FONT=Tahoma]Path: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Screensavers\Aurora[/FONT]

    [FONT=Tahoma]- NumLayers [DWORD][/FONT]
    [FONT=Tahoma]Value: 0 to 10[/FONT]

    [FONT=Tahoma]- Brightness [DWORD][/FONT]
    [FONT=Tahoma]Makes Aurora darker[/FONT]

    [FONT=Tahoma]in this folder. Global settings are put directly in the[/FONT]
    [FONT=Tahoma]parent key.[/FONT]

    i'd really appreciate it if someone could post the exact format, leaving out all the extraneous info, with notes on if there are lines before, after or at the end of each of the entries and spaces before or after each line. i've done a bunch of Googling & posted this request at a few other places & i can't find info i understand, no one knows how, or no one wants to reply...ok, i'll stop whining.

    thanks again,
    cake

    Hi

    Why you likely find no-one wants to answer is no-one really likes messing with the registry as well as going into too much detail on the registry changes needed, more so s if you dont know how to edit the registry in the first place its not a wise thing to do as it can lead to a non booting system depending on whats been deleted, changed etc

    Basics and just dealing with Aurora are:

    Open regedit (can do this by clicking Start > Run and type regedit and hit enter) and navigate to that location

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Screensavers\Aurora (HKCU = HKEY CURRENT USER) and if the KEY is not present you will need to add it, byright clicking the Screensavers folder and choosing New, then New Key and calling it Aurora

    Then to add the options to control it like NumLayers, open the Aurora folder in the registry and right click in the rigth side panels blank space and choose New > DWord and name it NumLayer and add a value of say 4 and click OK

    to add the others just in the same Aurora folder rigth click New > DWord and type the name and add a value.

    Tried this in a Virtual PC with XP Sp3 and didnt work well, but maybe thats either SP3 or the Virtual PC doesnt like the additions of the Vista Screensavers, so the choice is yours if you wish to add them and edit the registry, but TBH your not adding anything of vast crucial interest.

    sorry i'm so late in replying.

    Halo, thanks for the info (i DO understand why most don't want to touch the subject; i'm just happy you did & spent the time on me) AND i looked around some more (at the original author's forum) and ended up finding pre-made keys (forget where, now) which i haven't quite gotten around to using.

    too busy playing newly re-purchased 5 game Myst collection & first 3 Broken Sword games. LOL (got all 8 (Amazon & eBay) for a whopping $50.00...sheesh! i spent close to $400.00 when i originally bought them)

    when i decide to take the time & do the reg fixes, i'll post back. could be awhile; games are MUCH more fun. ;)
