Hello...looking to you guys for help again. I'm trying to set up a computer for my husband. We have an HP Pavilion xg383, running Windows XP Pro, Version 2002, Service Pack 2. I have installed a Belkin N300 Wireless USB Adapter. The "instructions" on Belkin's website states, "Connect your computer to your modem or router without any cables. Simply insert the setup CD, run the software setup and plug the adapter into a USB port on your computer, and you’re ready to connect to the Internet from anywhere in your home." However, the installation cd downloaded into a folder in program files, but when I look in the device manager it show's "Lynksys NC100 Fast Ethernet Adapter". I'm assuming that's what my friend was using before she gave us this computer.

On my Dell Desktop I have a Verizon Westall Router. I can connect other devices, i.e. cell phones, laptops, etc. to the internet using the Verizon router.

Help! What am I doing wrong? Please keep your answers "simple" and in layman's terms. I can follow directions pretty well, but get confused easily. A "step-by-step" would really help!

    Thanks in advance!

Go to http://www.belkin.com/us/support. Type in the exact model or find it using the drop-down menu. It will take you to a page with a "downloads" option.

Download the driver for XP and install it. Unless the instructions say otherwise, be sure the wireless adapter is connected to the PC before starting the install.

If this does not fix the problem please post a reply. Hope this helps. :)

Don't forget to uninstall the NC100 adapter completely. This means in the programs list first if applicable, and then via Device Manager.

Let us know how you fare...

Okay...I've uninstalled Lynksys. But, if I can't connect to the internet, I can't download from the Belkin website. Could I download it from my Dell, burn it onto a CD, then install it onto HP that way? :confused

This download says it's for OS XP Service Pack 3...the HP is running Service Pack 2. Will that matter?

Sites mention XP SP3 because MS dropped support for anything below SP3.

The driver is 11.^MB. Why waste a CD burning it to that. If you have a USB stick, move the downloaded driver from the computer it was downloaded on, onto the USB stick and then take the stick to the computer unable to connect to the internet and install it from the USB stick.

Hi guys! I'm not sure what worked...I did find that the Lynksys had not uninstalled, so I ran the uninstall wizard again. I unplugged everything, then plugged it all back in and it started working! Connected to the internet! You still rock! :wave

You mentioned that the driver was for SP3. SP3 is available as a direct download from here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24

It's an autorun installer that you burn to CD.

You can then, if you need to, run your SP2 setup CD (if you have one) then run this installer to update your system to SP3.

You don't have to burn it to CD. It's a self extracting cabinet file which can be run from a USB stick just as easily.
