I Have Encountered A New Problem With Wmp 10. It Won't Open, Says " An Internal Error".... I Have Tried All Remedies I Found On This Site, And Still No Success. I Have Tried To Reinstall, It Says "an Unexpected Error Has Occurred. Set Up Was Not Able To Detect Any Windows Med Update" And "missing Entry: Launch Inf Section C:window\inf\wmp.inf.

Wmp Will Not Rollback. Help!

Thanks For The Advise....i Tried All With No Luck At All. I Edited My Registry..then When I Tried To Open Wmp, Got Message That I Had To Download. Sad To Say..i Have Dial-up And It Took 4ever!!! Then Only To Get A Message That Wmp Could Not Finish Installing And I Had To Restart. So I Do, Then Get That Darn "an Internal Error.." I Checked My Registry (just For The Heck Of It) Only To Learn That All The Changes I Made To It Returned To What It Had Previously. Which Was As Follos:
Under "default" Value= " C:\programfiles\commonfiles\sumantecshared\scriptblocking\scrauth.dll"
Anyone Know What That Means?

Is There Any Hope? I Have No Clue What To Do Next.

That line and DLL is from a Norton product, try turning off Norton and re-install.

Forgot to ask which version of windows and what service pack are you using?

Have you done all the updates from windows update?

That Norton ( and do you have Norton installed? ) script blocking feature may well block those files from being re-registered, stop norton and re-try that MS page info again, mainly the 2 DLLs that need re-registering.

I have temporarily given up on this, but this and the fact that i cannot download sp2 due to somekind of access problem. Does anyone think something is really wrong with my registry(?) So my question is should i just clean out my hard drive and reinstall everything? or should I take my computer somewhere to get it fixed? Help!

you could try to uninstall WMP10 using this from the Start > Run box

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\windows\inf\wmp.inf,Uninstall

then install again.

as to re-installing, if you have all your important information and documents etc all backed up then, why not do it yourself.

What kind of access problem? Access problem as in: Microsoft checking to see if you have Genuine and legal copy of XP?

13. KIKA

KIKA Private E-2

I have a genuine legal copy.
The message I get when trying to install SP2, is " error creating registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.disabled Reg Create key failed; code 5 Access denied"
I can't get passed this.

Are you logged in as an administrator?

Yes.
following microsoft's tec support i checked the svcpak.log and found out that the registry key that is causing this is: HKCR\.dvr-ms
when i go to my registry and try to click this key, I get an error message that says "Connot open .dvr-ms: Error while opening key"

Right click on key, then select permissions. Do you have permissions on said key?

17. KIKA

KIKA Private E-2

message states that I do not have permission, but i can make permission changes

on the wmp note: I did as Halo suggested and unistalled, as i was installing, I received message that "install could not complete, please restart your computer and try again"
I did as directed, and received that wonderfull internal error message.
Does anyone think my two issues are related?

did you try this again http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=831430

Quite possible that both are linked in some way, corrupted files, registry etc.... theefool would at this point you be inclined to repair windows or see if permissions could be set for the install of SP2 which would install WMP again if not mistaken?

I have no other advice at present on this, seems when WMP goes wrong it goes wrong in spectacular fashion :(

I'd uninstall WMP 10 before installing sp2.
One question I do have is this:

Where in the sp2 installation phase does it stop at? Also, is this the windows update version, or the network version of sp2?

Bascially, a repair installation may be a choice, but I'd like to know what permissions on are set on each registry key.

Err, I should say, what permissions on set for each:

HKEY_Classes_Root
HKEY_Local_Machine

Just want to check to see if administrators have full privledges, also to check that you are part of the administrators local group:

Start, run, cmd (press enter).

net localgroup administrators (press enter)

Your username should be in this list.

 Sorry not sure I understand the question.

Initially, when I tried to download SP2 from the web, I contacted Microsoft's tech support, they thought that my dail-up was creating issues so they mailed me the SP2 on CD.
Does this help?

? regarding the previous directions to uninstall wmp, after typing in
should a message box have appeared?, I got nothing to indicate it was uninstalled.

Yes, it does indeed!

I only used Halo's suggestion that he posted earlier. Anyway, you should be able to remove windows media player 10 from add/remove programs located within control panel.

Side note: Did you recently change your avatar? It looks like a BESM avatar. If not, then I guess I was not paying attention to detail! ;)

Sorry, I will check tonight.

On your side note, I just added my avatar, not sure if it is a BESM, but I thought it was cute.

Ok, I just can checked the registry keys. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, had "read only" checked. I checked it "FULL CONTROL" while HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE had both boxes checked.
I ran my SP2 disk againg...received the following message durring the "backing up files" stage:
"Service Pack 2 setup could not back up registry key HKCR\.DVR-MS"

27. theefool

theefool Geekified

BESM. Big Eye, Small Mouth.

Anyway, go back to the registry entry, and go back to the permissions section.

Now, Click on Advanced.

Go to the owner tab. Next, double click on adminiistrators, then make sure you check the box "Replace Owner on Subcontainer and Objects"

Press OKay.

Next, make sure that Administrators has FULL control. If not, at the Group or Usernames, select ADD

Then, when the new window shows up, type in administrator, then select the "Check Names" button. Once that is done, press the Ok button.

Next, make sure the highlighted administrator has FULL access by selecting the check box "Allow" next the Full control.

Click ok. And try again....

If all else fails, try a repair installation......

I haven't tried to install SP2 yet. Thought I would let you know that as I
I received the following message: " registry could not set owner non the key currently selceted or some of it's subkeys"

Still think I should try install?

If I end up having to do a repair installation where can I go to find out what I need to do, because sad to say I have no clue how to do a repair installation.

Ok, I Tried It And Still The Same Problem. So Can Anyone Tell Me How To Go About How To Do A Repair Installation?
